How to Upgrade to WordPress 2.9 from WordPress 2.8 & Thesis 1.6

Difficulty Level -

Listed Under Lesson Subjects -

When learning to build a business website using WordPress it’s important to keep your WordPress site up to date. Not only does each update bring new features and bug fixes they also bring new security updates. Spammers try to hijack old sites by exploiting know security problems. One of the protections you have against this is keeping your website up to date.

On the other hand, any change to your site brings with it the chance that your site might no longer function properly. Even if that chance is slim it gives one pause. My bricklayer buddy hasn’t upgraded his 2.7 site yet for fear of that.

Fortunately, learning how to properly and safely upgrading your site isn’t that difficult.  Like cooking stir fry, it’s mostly preparation.  It involves:

  1. Understanding the proper upgrade sequence
  2. Backing up your site and database
  3. Preparing your site for the actual upgrade
  4. Performing the actual upgrade

Just followed these instructions to upgrade from wp 2.9 to 3.0 using Thesis 1.7.

That was mostly successful, I lost a couple of images on my top nav … but I am sure you will help me figure that out ;)

Kim, I think the problem you are having stems from using an early version of Thesis with the new version of WordPress. The thing to do would be to upgrade to the latest version of WordPress and then upgrade to Thesis 1.8.

DIYThemes has an excellent video on upgrading to 1.8 from 1.6 or 1.7. You can find it here – http://diythemes.com/thesis/downloads/upgrade/
