Greetings,

I have had similar conversations about this subject regarding my site not showing up in searches, and now over two years later, it is still an issue. We follow all the basic guidelines, and yet the site does not show. So I tried yet another experiment, and would like you to do the same please.

The first action item I did was this: I copied a post title from our website and put it into google: Invest is not a 4-letter word

The result; pages and pages of search results and our site was nowhere to be found.

For the second test, I added quotes: "invest is not a 4-letter word"

This time resulted in two results from our site that had nothing to do with the post that I typed in:

Top 10 Pizzas in Austin | Best Pizza in Austin | Austin Pizzerias

Gypsy Picnic Food Trailer Festival | Local Austin  Food Trailers Gather

Sooooo, if I type in verbatim a post title from my site, with quotes, and google does not even see that, but brings up something else, my issue is not following seo protocols, the issue is that I still say something is terribly wrong with my site, that it still does not show up in search results. And if the site cannot even come up when typing a post title in quotes, then it certainly will never show up for anything else. Am I wrong here?

Also, another proof that something is very wrong is that I did a search for any old website and found a site on page 40 of the google search; I wanted an unknown site versus a page one search result. I went to the site, copied a blog post, went to google, pasted it in the search bar, and bam…, just like that, the site shows up number one of that article.

I wish someone could help us. There has got to be someone that can look at our site in the back-end to figure this out. We have all this original content, over two years of working on this thing and we have gotten zero return for all this work and nothing to show up in google search, not even when we copy and paste an article. And yes, we are very frustrated and disappointed. Especially when it seems that other folks have their sites show up in a shorter amount of time or when we copy and paste something from their site.

John, you are testing a system that doesn't exist.  Google wants to return "relevant" results in a search.  So it tries it's darnedest to determine what is relevant given the search terms.  Even exact match returns are based on relevance.

So when you search for your (very generic) post title it finds a number of instances of that title on your site.  It breaks the tie by offering the page with the highest rank or value.  So it finds your title on a number of pages (because you are using a widget that displays recent posts) and it serves the most important pages on your site.  Which happens to be the ones you see.

However, none of your customers is going to say to them selves "I want to find a real estate professional in the Austin area.  I'll search for 'Investment isn't a 4 letter word' "

So, that title is (or appears to be) entirely irrelevant to your site and your site's content.

However, search for "Monica City Real Estate" and you're on the front page.

Search for "Austin Monica City Real Estate" and you own the top two positions of the first page

"monica city texas" you're #2 on the first page

"homes in northwest austin" which is obviously a very competitive niche – puts you on page 5.

"homes in northwest austin monica city" puts you in slots 1 & 4 of page 1.

So, I would conclude that the SEO you are doing is working just fine.  I can find you easily using keywords taken from your site.

If you want to test how well you do your SEO you need to test where you rank for the main keywords of your site, not for an obscure, generic phrase.

This is very good data that you have shared with me. I wonder since I have been using the same router, system, and from the same location to make these searches, that maybe something is acting a little strange too.

Either way, this is really good news regarding your results and insights regarding obscure phrases. You have lifted our spirits, as we went absolutley crazy this morning posting and asking anyone & everyone we could possibly think of for some insight. This is just good news overall then. Thank you so much again!

We will get back to it and keep creating more content then.

Take care!

So, I presume you understand why "Investing isn't a 4 letter word" is a crummy title.  It has no keywords related to your site, and is VERY generic.  Investing in what?  Investing in stamps?  Artwork?  Personal Mental Health?

If the article is about purchasing real estate then you should focus your title on that.  "Invest in a Home in Monica City – Invest isn't a 4 letter word".  That has actual search benefit.  Everyone and their dog uses the word "Invest" for spending money buying their stuff.  So using it generically is useless.

Worse, it dilutes your site.

The MORALE here is:

When you want to know how effective your SEO efforts are, ask yourself how your ideal customer is likely to search for you and try searching that way.  If you can't find yourself then they're not working, if you can then they are.

This probably should also be the test of content you create.  If you ideal customer isn't going to be looking for you by searching fro that content they it's probably a waste of time.  Or at least it's not an efficient use of time.  When creating content, create content that people will use when looking for you.

Forget the baseball scores, weather reports or restaurant reviews – unless when someone is looking for those they hope to find you.

John and Monica,

Thank-you for sharing with us your frustration.  If you will indulge me just a little, I would like to share with you my limited experience.

My primary website is http://www.LadyLuckDiary.com. (Not the best name for my website, but I didn't know that then.)  I sell a $3 book that lets slot machine players track their gambling activity for tax purposes.  Many people consider compare it to a mileage logbook.

Every so often, I will check the WP Site Stats that are available with JetPack.  I print the report that shows every search term that someone has ever used to find my website.  Then, I review that report closely.  Very closely.  This way I can understand the keywords that people are using to find me.

Moreover, I check the the part of WP Site Stats that shows what links refer back to my website.  Once, I found a discussion forum where someone posted a question, and someone else replied back with a "See this page on this website for your answer."  I quickly joined the discussion forum, and answered the question a little bit more thoroughly.  Next, I offered a free booklet to anybody that sent me a fax with their email and snail mail addresses.  To this day, I still get "link juice" from this site.

I also use Google Analytics.  It tells me about the people that are using my website.  For example, where they are from, what operating system/browers they are using, AND SIZE OF THEIR SCREENS!!!  If people are using smart phones with 4-inch screens, make sure your site looks good.

Recently I have started to use Google Alerts.  I have several terms that I watch.  One day I posted an article about a certain topic, and sure enough on the next day I got a "Google Alert" showing that Google had found my new post.

But you have to remember that SEO is all about "relevance" – what do other people think about you.  So I have also done some extra things to help.  I have taught seminars for several legal and accounting groups and written articles for several different trade magazines.  The credits say, "Reece B. Morrel, Jr. is a very handsome and modest fellow (just kidding), and the author of the Lady Luck Gambling Diary, etc."  This info gets posted on their websites.

As another example, I have a good friend that voluntarily posted a "glowing" recommendation on a major Wiki website.

Now, with FaceBook and Twitter we also have to worry about SMO (Social Media Optimization).

For my next trick, I hope to be more proactive with an email subscription newsletter like Aweber.com or MadMimi.com.

Sorry for the long post.  You are certainly welcome to call me, if you would like to discuss this further.  My telephone number is on the website.

Hope this helps.

Reece

Thanks very much to the both of your input and insight. By far, this has been one of the most valuable forum strings I have been part of.

I appreciate Reece for stepping in a sharing your history. You have been a founding member, just as I have, and I know you have invested much time posting and sharing with others on the site, and I know I speak for others when I say "Thank You!"

I am sure you know this already, but as far as mail subscription services go, I have researched quite a few of them looking at all the pros/cons etc, and I think MailChimp has come a long way, tons of support/videos/live sessions, and you can use it for free, up to 12,000 emails per month sent out. There are others, Benchmark is good also. Yeah, aweber is like the standard when it comes to email subscriptions, if paying the fee is not an issue.

One other item, along the lines of "links" to other sites, this is an area we are lacking on our site. So if you are okay with the quality of our site http://www.MonicaCityLiving.com, and want to try the link thing, let me know and you can share with us how to proceed. I have been told links are important also and it would be good if we can team up and give it a shot.

Thoughts?

On the subject of links – a link has 3 components:

  1. The page on the site being linked to
  2. The anchor text used for the link
  3. The context in which the link is placed.
For a link to be really valuable all 3 of those things should match.  The subject of the page linked to should be similar to the content of the page linked from and the link text should reflect that similarity.
I recently saw a very good spam content writer offer her services as a guest blogger.  She would write a very nicely written article for your blog and the only "cost" to you is that there are a couple of subtle links in the content to sites that pay her.
So, she might write an article about real estate in Austin and say something like "when you move into your new home and plop down on your sofa you'll feel great".  The whole topic of the article could be relevant to your site, however, she puts a link on "sofa" to a sofa and sectionals website.  The link has nothing to do with the topic of the article which has nothing to do with the site linked to, it's just a subtly disguised link.
That's the kind of link Google tries to ignore.

John and Monica, I would be interested in Rick's opinion and insight of what happened with the links in my website.

I have about 30+ court cases.  A fair number of these cases refer back to each.  Popular legal research websites like Westlaw and Lexis/Nexis have links between these cases.  So, naturally I did too.

My website probably breaks every rule about links.  For example, I am told that Google gives more importance to links that are closer to the top of the page.  Also, I have heard that Google doesn't like it if you have multiple links on the same page that refer back to the same place.  But, with court cases I don't have the luxury of where the links occur or how often.

But, if you type in the name or citation of the case, my website usually ranks on either page 1 or 2 of Google.  So something must be working.

Now, I do have some articles that I have on various topics, and I am able to optimize them with keywords and links to the court cases.

One other thing that I have done is provide links back to federal and state tax commissions and gaming agencies – .gov websites.  I don't know if this makes a difference to Google, but it sure is convenient for me and other tax professionals.

As far as the subscription services, here is all that I know.

I am the Treasurer of the Tulsa Fencing Club.  I did the website for the Tulsa Fencing Club in about 2 weeks.  A basic WordPress + Thesis + BYOBWebsite.com product.

Jeff Starkweather, our Club President, is also very tech savvy.  In a prior life, he ran a software company and then sold out before the dot.com bubble burst.  Currently, he is a general contractor building custom homes in the $500,000 to $4,000,000 range.

He uses Constant Contact for his business and has a list of over 3,500 names.  He was recently asked to give a presentation on Social Media for a builders conference.

We reviewed several products, Aweber, MailChimp, Constant Contact and Mad Mimi.  We needed something so that we could provide a monthly newsletter, tournament announcements, class announcements and bad weather cancellations.  Mad Mimi did not require a double-opt in.  You enter the names and go.  We had to promise that we legitimately gathered the names but that was it.

Often times we will have people come to the club and want to sign-up for the newsletter.  We login to the website using my iPad. They type in their name, address and email address and we are done.  No double opt-in hassle.  It just works.

We also like how easy it is to use.  One week-end we decided to have a tournament on the following week-end.  I was able to copy an existing "promotion", change the dates, hit send and was done.  Very nice.

Because it is so simple, any one of the club officers can login and send whatever notification they want.

The trick is to find the "right" tool for the job.  For the Tulsa Fencing Club, Mad Mimi is the right tool.

It has been a while since I have studied MailChimp.  I will look at it closer next time I am evaluating such products.

So my comments about links are for SEO links.  That is – links you have placed in the text specifically for SEO.  Your links serve another purpose – even a higher purpose.  I wouldn't worry about SEO in that context.

I have also used http://www.PRLog.org for press releases.

They have a minimum requirement of 300 words or 5,000 characters. A pretty sizeable amount that shouldn't interest most spammers.

This is another technique used to build external links back to your website.
