Gidday there Rick

Having a bit of trouble getting the more tag to play nice.  Before placing the code in the content block the excerpt displays on the blog.  After using the  [byob_mobile_switcher block=1] short code the whole article displays on the blog page.  Are you able to find a work around?  And is there any way to have images re-sized when using the content blocks or can they be eliminated.  Just that viewing them on my mobile they appear large.  Or could that be the phone I use?

Hope this finds you well, I noticed you cancelled a couple of Q&A sessions last week.

Dennis – can you post the link to the page where this occurs?  The shortcode shouldn't have any affect on the more tag – but I'd like to see it in action.

Sure you can put a smaller version of the image in the mobile block.  Obviously this plugin doesn't make a page that fits in the mobile format.  It just presents "mobile" content when a mobile device is used.  Since there is no "mobile" image format, the only thing to do would be to resize the image yourself.

What the plugin is "really" for is video.  The intention is to provide you with the ability to place a flash video on your page and have it swap out for a non-flash version or a mobile optimized version when a mobile device accesses the page.  Although you could also use it for announcements or mobile optimized adds.

OK so what I did was left the text as is and placed the EasyFLV video players code and Flowplayer code in the plugin content boxes.

[content block 1] I checked using the Opera mini browser on my phone but still get the message that Flash is not installed and therefore cannot view the video.  This message comes with the EasyFLV player. There is no actual path to the video in the code.  It's all referenced by the swf.js file.

[content block 2] The second video I used the Flowplayer plugin. I'm getting a second message that I need Flash installed but myNokia E-5 phone doesn't support Flash.

Dennis, the plugin can't make a flash video into a mobile compatible video.  What it does is "switch" content.  However, if that content is video then the video that shows to mobile devices needs to already be mobile compatible.  I'm guessing, as the name suggests that the EasyFLV video player plays flv videos, which are flash videos.

The way I use this is that I host those videos that I need to have mobile versions of on Vimeo.  So now – every video on this site (almost) has a Flash version hosted on Amazon s3 and mobile version hosted on Vimeo.  The plugin will then switch the video that is displayed between flash and vimeo.

An alternative that allows you to host both on your own servers would be to use a non-flash player and to convert your videos to a mobile format.  The mobile format would generally be smaller in dimensions and would be in mp4 rather than flv.

Yeah I figured that a couple of hours after writing this.embarassed  Takes a while for the penny to sink to the bottom these days.  I started toying with a plugin that detects the mobile device then presents a choice to display a mobile version of your blog.  It works but after spending half a day last week getting the floating social sidebar to work and playing with the css it covers half the article on the mobile version.  Can be very trying when you work with WordPress smile

I also used a open source program called Handbrake which does a nice job of converting your video files for display on mobile devices.  The file came out at 200x150 in dimensions and plays great on the desktop.  I tried loading it as m4v with Flowplayer without success and converted it to mp4 but both produce a blank container without no video.

It was a trial really to see if the Mobile version would display the mp4 but I uploaded it to Vimeo after reading this so I will give that a try.  I'm also trying to get EasyFLV player to grab the videos from Amazon but it's taking ages to load so I went back to putting them on my server.  One does some irrational things when they start out on this internet adventure.  But that's what makes people rich I guess…those like me who are uninformed when starting out.   Lucky we have our guru's. ..laugh

p.s.  I apologize for chiming in during Q&A  I'll keep a lid on it now.  The site I was trying to point out for the member wanting video conversions was fiverr.com  You can outsource a lot of things on that site and for just $5 can be good.  Just have to watch what your outsourcing and find ratings on the person offering the service.

There are other options besides vimeo as well.  I'm going to choose one of the HTML5 video player plugins on the repository and do a short series on self hosting mobile video.  It is possible to "roll your own" with mobile video.  I'll figure it out and do a series on it.
