Thesis Navigation Menu

Hi,

I have to create two separate set of menus – the first is the Thesis Navigation Menu which is the default menu and the second one is to be created. The first Thesis Nav menu is going to be placed below the header and I want to place my categories here since all the sections listed here will have frequent changes in the content.

The second menu will be placed at top right with static sections such as About, Contact, Team etc.

I have got access to the Plugins. However, I am a bit confused between the three plugin options namely wp menus, thesis nav menu and thesis simple nav menu.

I have tried look at the tutorials as well but no luck. Perhaps am missing something somewhere.

Please help me out with this. Thanks.

I currently have 3 plugins:

BYOB Thesis Navigation Menu plugin provides a very full range of style choices for the Thesis nav menu.  You can change almost anything, including styling each individual menu item separately.  There are literally hundreds of options.

BYOB Thesis Simple Nav Menu plugin provides a much simpler version of the above.  You would use one or the other but not both.

BYOB WP Menus plugin (soon to be re-released as the BYOB Thesis Multiple Menus plugin) will allow you to create up to 10 styles of menus that can be applied to any number of WordPress menus.  It also allows you to place menus around the page.  It works in conjunction with either of the other two.

So, you would use one of the nav menu plugins to style your first nav menu and then the WP menus plugin to style any other menus.

Thanks Rick for your answer.

This point is quite clear now. Additionally, I am also looking for some sort of a note/tutorial on using WP menus – are there any in any format – texts or videos? Please let me know. Thanks.

Thanks Rick. Am going through the tutorials.

One very basic question: If I am going to use Wp menu plugin and a default thesis menu, do i choose Wordpress Nav or Thesis Nav under Thesis > Site Options.

The Thesis Nav menu is being discontinued in future versions of Thesis.  So, you're better off simply selecting the WordPress Menu.  However, the plugins will work with either.  As far as the plugins are concerned it's the same menu.  The Thesis Nav Menu settings will act on which ever menu is selected in Thesis Site Options.

Thanks for the information.

I have another related query.

I have created a separate menu for category. So, now I have two sets of menus. The first one is the default Thesis which I want to use for static pages. This is placed at the top right, before the header.

The second one which is created for categories is placed after the header.

I am also using wp menus plugin.

I wish to have two different alignments of the menus. While the first one is at top right, the second menu for categories need to be left aligned.

While working with the wp menus plugin, the category menu by default takes the alignment of the Thesis Menu. How can the two be made different?

Also, if you could clarify, while creating a menu for categories, there is a column on the right side of the dashboard which says Theme Locations and reads Your theme supports 1 menu. What is to be chosen there.

You have to create a style that you will apply to the category menu.  Otherwise it will accept the style of the Thesis Nav Menu.  You can set the alignment for your new style in it's settings.

Theme Locations – The Primary Menu should be the menu you are using in place of the Thesis Nav Menu.  You should set this.  Hint – it isn't the category menu.

Hi,

I have created categories as the second navigation and it is placed just below the header image. I intend this menu to act completely like a website. And I have to disable clicks on title of the categories. So, if a category has 6 sub-menus further, it should show up directly on hovering of the mouse. If a user selects any of the sub-menus, it should go to that relevant post.

The other point that I need to understand is I have decided to have three-levels of navigation as explained below:

Let's say we have a category Animals in the navigation. It further has 4 sub menus – Dogs, Cats, Tiger, and Lions. Now Dogs are further categorised as Labarador, German Shephard, Hound and Terrier. How can this be structured so that it functions like a website.

Please suggest. Many thanks.

I'm not sure what you mean by "functions like a website".

Hi,

What I mean is I intend to have a combination of static and dynamic sections in my website, with two set of menus.

I am going to have categories in the menu after the header image. And this is going to have a three-level navigation as mentioned above. I do not wish the title of the category in the nav menu to be clickable.

Please suggest. Thanks.

Can you attend one of the live sessions today?

The written answer is to use the WordPress menu system for this menu.  In fact you should only use the WordPress menu system from now on.  Thesis will be discontinuing it's menu system.

For the category "heads" you'll create a custom link that has # as the url.  Here's a video on how to do that - http://www.byobwebsite.com/ans…..to-a-page/

Hi,

The link that you have provided in your previous comment doesn't work. It says Page not found.

Yeah, it works OK for me too.  However if you look under Live Answers under the topic WordPress Menu you'll find it in that group of videos.
