I recently installed the Smooth slider plugin on my blog and  was wondering if anyone here has any experience on how to make it show up on my homepage using openhooks?

I don't any longer recommend using Open Hook.  However it is very easy to add this using custom_functions.php.

Assuming you want the slider to show up below your header add this code to your custom_functions.php file:

function add_smooth_slider(){
    if(is_front_page()){
        if ( function_exists( 'get_smooth_slider' ) ) {
            get_smooth_slider(); }
    }
}
add_action('thesis_hook_after_header', 'add_smooth_slider');

Thanks Rick. worked like a charm. Spent hours, yesterday, tying to figure this out – and you sort it out in couple of secs :) So glad I'm part of this forum. Best thesis forum in the entire planet, solar system, universe etc. Wink Keep up the good work.

Hi Rick

I am curious to know why you no longer recommend using Thesis Open hook. True that is it as easy to modify the custum-function. Actually the only I use it now it to test something first but otherwise I don,t have anything on it right now.

Is there other reasons?

Thanks

The last time I checked it hasn't been updated to the latest Thesis 1.8 hooks.  Also, I have heard folks say that it doesn't handle conditional statements well.

Once you gain the skill set, it is much easier (I think) to edit the custom_functions.php file directly.

That's the way I am heading and why I joined the membership here. I love Thesis but now it's time to sharpen my pencil…or my keyboard in this case :-)

Just convince me to remove openthook as a plugin, I'm in streamlining mode

Hello.  I am a new member here.  I hope I can make a positive contribution to this website (while learning as much as I can)!

On the subject of the Smooth Slider plugin, I would first like to say that I've been pulling my hair out over this issue for a week.  No other listing I found on the web actually had the right code to put the slider on a static home page!  I can't begin to tell you how relieved I am to have finally found the correct code here!  Thanks to you, Rick, for providing the correct information!

I do have a question, though, about the placement of the slider.

It seems to be the case that this code only allows the slider to appear above all of the content, to include the title of the page and everything.  How can I move the slider around on the page and decide for myself where to put it?

The site in question is a client's site at http://JamaicanGlory.com

I would also appreciate any advice you (or anyone in this forum) might have on improvements to the site.

Thanks again!

Rick – Welcome to the forum.smile

Theoretically the slider can be hooked to any Thesis hook you like.  If you're unfamiliar with Thesis hooks watch the Introduction to editing Thesis using PHP videos.  If i's still not clear just post back.

Rick,

Thanks for your prompt response to me in this thread.  From what I've seen of your site, your service and this forum thus far, I have high hopes of utilizing this site and your advice as a valuable tool in my arsenal as I work with Thesis on a wide range of sites.

I will certainly do as you say if my schedule allows (and I think it will).  However, I'd like to know if we could speak about it in the interest of time.  It appears your services are more instructional in nature rather than in assistance on actual sites, but I'd like to know if you could have a conversation from time to time about specific questions.  Do you do that?  If so, please tell me how that would work and what I need to do.

Thanks!

Rick, I help members with their sites all day long.  I've just started adding twice weekly call in Question and Answer "webinars" for members to call in and get help that they feel is best explained "in person".  In fact Stump the Chump is my dry run.  The first official one of these is Monday.

I encourage folks to post "specific questions".  Somewhere along the line someone else is going to need help with the same thing and they may find the answer simply by searching the forum.

Also, members do hire me from time to time to give them extra help.  If you feel you need more than you're getting otherwise we can set that up.

Hello again, Rick!

I'm a little stumped about the whole issue of using a "shortcode" to get Smooth Slider to show up somewhere other than before all of the content (i.e. within the content).  Honestly, I had never heard of a "shortcode" before I found your forum.  What is a shortcode?  In what language is it written?  Html?  Php?  CSS?  Do you have anything here on your site that teaches it from the beginning (such as "Shortcode 101" or something)?

Thanks!

Rick – a shortcode is a WordPress element that allows you to reference a php function within the "content" area of a WordPress site.  I'll do a video introduction of it for you and others to see.

However the short version is that a short code consists of opening and closing brackets, a function name and sometimes some parameters.  For example, when using the smooth slider plugin you would insert [smoothslider id='1'] where "smoothslider" is the function name and "id='1'" is the parameter.

If you've created multiple smooth sliders you would use the id number you want to display.

Finally, you would place this shortcode in the content where you want the slider to display.

Hi Rick,

Sorry I haven't responded here in a few days.

Were you able to do a video on short code as mentioned above?  If so, could you tell me where to find out for my benefit as well as for anyone else who may be reading this for the same answer?

Thanks!

Hello again, Rick.

I have another question on smooth slider.  I saw on your architects website that you have what appears to be smooth slider there.  I was wondering how you made smooth slider transition the way it's doing, and how you got the text to show up on each image the way it does.

Could you explain how you customized smooth slider on that site, or even better, do a video on that?
