In this session we show how to create a 2 column feature box in the Carta skin for Thesis 2.1 by configuring the column wrapper to be 2 columns. We discuss the importance of giving the columns descriptive names so you can easily understand what they are for. We also explain the difference between a feature box as a column and a feature box widget area as a widget. For more information on that topic we suggest you watch the videos on the Beginners Guide to the Thesis Skin Editor.
Member: Well, I’m trying to put in the front page under feature box, I was following one of your videos and I noticed my feature box it had a plus sign on it when I click on it, I don’t see like Carta column wrapper on it. So anyway, it’s kind of a basic question but I’m trying to…
Rick: Yeah, I’m making you the presenter so you can show us your screen.
Member: Okay. I’m on the front page right now. Excuse me. Anyway, I just want the meteor slider on one side and then on the right side I just want to have some remarks.
Rick: Okay, so show me what you got.
Member: Alright let’s see, home page.
Rick: Do you have 2 monitors?
Rick: Okay, I’m seeing the other monitor.
Member: Oh, yeah.
Rick: The monitor I see is the one that says Connect to to GoToWebinar.
Member: Of couse it’s good…
Member: So you needed me to slide it over?
Rick: I do, I mean you need to show me the monitor you want me to see.
Member: Okay, wait a second here. Okay.
Member: Okay so my issue is well…
Rick: Show me your feature box.
Member: Okay, the feature box here let’s see, right there. All right, there is my feature box. I tried to recreate it and this is what I came up with but they didn’t quite look right.
Rick: Well, yeah so what you must have done is deleted the old feature box.
Rick: But it looks like you’re close. You should change the names of those so the Carta Column Wrapper is your Feature Box Wrapper and your Carta Column is your..
Member: They’re on the right group?
Rick: Well just go ahead and do it.
Member: Okay. So Carta Column or Feature Box?
Rick: I would just call it Feature Box Left Column.
Rick: You need to give these things descriptive names.
Member: Let’s see so we hit okay.
Rick: Okay, now create a new column.
Member: How do I do that?
Rick: Select the box to add the same way you created this column.
Member: Oh, okay. Just Carta Column?
Rick: Well, you’re going to need to create a new one so scroll down to where you get down to the asterisks.
Member: Okay. Carta Column right there.
Rick: Yeap. Add that box.
Rick: Change its name to Feature Box Right Column.
Member: What’s this, “It looks like you may have been logged out of WordPress. Log back in”?
Rick: Yeah, so go back up to the big white Thesis. You’re going to have to redo this but go back to the big white Thesis up there in the top right.
Member: Oh, okay. It barred in my way.
Rick: Yeah, you can minimize that by pressing the red arrow.
Rick: Okay, now go back to skin editor.
Rick: Okay, open up the Main Content Column. Oh, no actually, we seem to have lost everything.
Member: Yeah. Oh, no this is home.
Member: We need the front page, right?
Rick: Right, I’m sorry yeap.
Rick: Okay, so open your Carta Column Wrapper.
Rick: Create a new Carta Column.
Rick: Change its name to Feature Box Right Column. After this you have to go in and give these other two things descriptive names.
Rick: Now see where it says “Select the width for this column”?
Rick: Select the one-third width. Say okay.
Member: Alright. Okay.
Rick: Drag it into the Carta Column Wrapper.
Member: Oh, okay.
Rick: Drag it down below the Left Column.
Member: I didn’t quite hear you.
Rick: Drag it down below the Left Column or drag Left Column up.
Member: Let’s see, I’m not sure what you mean.Okay so here’s…
Rick: Well, the Carta Column that is not named?
Rick: That’s your Left Column, right?
Member: Oh, okay I didn’t know that. All right yeah because you do know why…
Rick: That’s how you have it setup.
Member: Okay, all right I got you.
Rick: So Left has to be above Right.
Member: Okay. All right.
Rick: There you go, save your template and now you have a 2 Column Feature Box.
Rick: What I was trying to explain on the forum was for each column you want you have to have a column wrapper around the columns and you have to create a column for each column you want.
Member: Okay, I see.
Rick: And then you have to configure them all so that they understand what they’re supposed to be. So I presume you’ve already configured your Column Wrapper as being 2 columns. Did you?
Member: No, I don’t remember so…
Rick: Well, why don’t you open it up and let’s see.
Member: Okay. So here?
Rick: The Column Wrapper.
Member: The Column Wrapper, all right.
Member: Single column.
Rick: You have it setup as a single column so that won’t work. So you have to do 2 columns, two-thirds one-third. It’s just the third one down, two-thirds one-third.
Member: Oh, okay got it. All right. Ready.
Rick: Save your template and everything should work properly now.
Member: So is the blue feature box is inside of the.. Where is that at?
Rick: Well, the blue thing you’re calling the “Feature Box” is a widget area.
Member: Oh, okay.
Rick: And you created it yourself.
Member: Alright. Yeah, I see it under widgets.
Member: But I’ve got a (09:55) to see it here as well.
Rick: Well if you open that up you’ll see it.
Member: Under here, okay. All right, yeah. So why is it when you’re demonstrating the video how to do this that when I open this Feature Box up here, you said we used (10:25)? That’s what you said though, it’s a widget so I was saying widget.
Rick: Because what I was demonstrating, my widget area wasn’t called Feature Box, right? What you’ve done is tried to recreate what Carta used to have.
Rick: But that you deleted.
Member: I see.
Rick: Okay. The Feature Box was the Column Wrapper. The Feature Box Column was the column and the Feature Box widget area was the widget.
Member: Okay. Could I restore what I deleted or not?
Rick: Well, sure you could have restored the defaults or you could have recreated them from scratch like you’re trying to do.
Member: Well, so when you do restore, if I wanted to restore to the default, can you just restore this front page to it default?
Member: You have to…
Rick: Restore all of the templates to their defaults.
Member: Okay, and how do you do that?
Rick: So have you gone through the Beginner’s Guide to the Thesis Skin Editor yet? It seems like a lot of your questions that you’re asking here are resolved pretty thoroughly in that seminar.
