In this session we show how to create a real estate listing with custom post types and custom fields in Thesis 2.1 using the Types plugin and the BYOB Post Meta Fields Extended Box for Thesis 2.1 which gives you a great deal of control over the post meta.
We also recommend watching the video on How to Display Testimonials in Thesis 2.1 Using Custom Post Types & Taxonomies because it shows how to create this system using Thesis tools, BYOBWebsite tools and the Types plugin.

Rick: Perfect. So your question is how to create custom post types with multiple fields for a client to easily add his real estate listings?
Member: Yes.
Rick: Well, the easiest tool for that job is the Types plugin and you can find that in wordpress.org under Plugins and you can create custom taxonomies, custom post meta fields, custom post types, all of those things in the same plugin, it’s this one right here Types – Custom Fields and Custom Post Types Management. It’s actually fairly easy, I have a bunch of videos on the site that talk about how to use it but this is the tool that I would use and it’s pretty straightforward. In fact, let’s see Case Studies I think a case study on this, if I don’t have a case study I’ve got the… where’s the Recipe website thing? Well, yeah okay it must be under Thesis Seminars then. Are you working in Thesis or Genesis?
Member: Thesis.
Rick: Okay so under Thesis 2x seminars let’s see where is it I got so much stuff here. Well, now How to Display Testimonials in Thesis 2.1 Using Post Types and Taxonomies is probably a great one for you because it shows you both the Thesis tools, my tools and Types.
Member: Okay.
Rick: And so this is probably the best one because you also want a way of displaying that post meta, right?
Member: Right.
Rick: And I have a box under Member Benefits, Thesis 2.1 Boxes I have a box for that. Let’s see BYOB Post Meta Fields Extended Box for Thesis 2.1 which allows you a great deal of control over the post meta.
Member: Okay so I would use that because I was looking at that plugin before our call and I’ve downloaded it, mess with it a little and then it said I needed to have Views so I would use the post meta box…
Rick: Oh, yeah you don’t need I mean if you’re working in Genesis you’d need to buy Views to use it as well but in Thesis you can just use my box and then the ordinary Thesis stuff because Thesis actually has a bunch of built-in stuff that will work just fine with custom taxonomies and custom post types.
Member: So I would get your box and put it like on the page that I want to display it and that’s where when…
Rick: Exactly and you just choose what post meta you want to show up and it’ll display that and you can put stuff in front of it or after it, you can have WYSIWYG post meta content, you can use shortcodes in the post meta and even now over the holiday I added the ability to link the post meta back to the title so if you know, a lot of people who were wanting to use a short title in an excerpt so you can use the post meta field to create the short title and then use that checkbox in the box and it’ll link back to the thing so it’s a very flexible plugin for displaying and implementing post meta. It doesn’t create it for you so that’s where Types comes in but for displaying it it’s pretty powerful.
Member: Oh, perfect thank you so much.
Rick: You’re welcome. Now John mentions that I also recommend using Custom Post Type UI instead of Types and it’s true you know, I use them interchangeably except that or I use Custom Post Type UI when I know I’m not going to want custom post meta and I use Types when I know that I am going to want custom post meta. It’s as simple as that, Custom Post Type UI it’s very straightforward but it only creates post types and taxonomies. If you want post types, taxonomies and custom post meta or just custom post meta then I use Types.
