In this session we answered the question, “Should I start a new site in Thesis 2 or stick with Thesis 1.85?”. We discuss the kind of site to be created and whether it is to be responsive and the benefits of Thesis 2. We also point out talk about some of our video seminars as good starting points for this and those are “A Beginners Guide to the Thesis 2.0 Skin Editor” and “Skin Management in 2.0.1”.
Member: Well, I had gotten pretty good with Thesis 1. I pretty much could do most of what I wanted by copying code and pasting here and there and doing okay. Thesis 2 has me totally baffled. Now I know eventually it will be easier for now, I’m totally lost. So I have to start a new website this week and I’m wondering if… this is for me, this is not for a client or anything. This is strictly for me. I’m wondering if I should go ahead and bite the bullet and start with whatever is available with Thesis 2 or just give up on Thesis 2 until the next site and just go ahead with what I know.
Rick: What’s the site going to do?
Member: It’s going to be kind of a landing page for people that I will have talked to who may want some more information after I leave them.
Rick: So you don’t have a shopping cart on it or anything like that?
Rick: You know, I would try it in Thesis 2.
Rick: And eventually, you’ll undoubtedly find that Thesis 2 a fair bit easier to work with than Thesis 1. And a site like you’re talking about is probably you know, a fairly simple thing to do in Thesis 2.
Member: Okay. Alright well then, I will go with that. I thought I’d ask your advice so… but I could follow it so I will.
Rick: Is the site going to be.. do you want it to be responsive? Do you want it to work well in a mobile device or…
Member: Yes I do because the one thing I will be talking to people about precisely is using the mobile phone for a bunch of things.
Rick: So then you want to download one of my responsive skin mods for Thesis classic.
Member: I will do that.
Rick: And you know, if it’s a landing page site, it probably doesn’t have a sidebar in it and so there is the one column version…
Member: I still have to do that. I looked at it. I didn’t know you have put all of this. I’ve been kind of off lately. Today, I looked at what you had where I see you’ve done quite a bit already.
Rick: Yeah we have done quite a bit. And if you… I mean, a good starting place would be to watch the seminar… actually, there are two places for you to start. The first one is this Beginner’s Guide to the Thesis 2 Skin Editor and then once you’re done with that, Skin Management in 2.01. And from that point on, I mean, you should be working in 2.02. But the Skin Management is the same in both of them. And what you should be… I mean, when you have both of those things down comfortably, you should easily be able to you know, add a skin modification to Thesis classic and start making some of the changes that I think you probably want to make. And saving them and backing them up and you know, being comfortable playing around without feeling like you’re going to have to start from scratch.
Member: Yeah, I think I will do that. I’ll let you know when I have something to show.
Rick: Okay, that will be good.
Rick: Anything else?
Member: No, I’m good. Thank you.
Rick: You betcha. Have a good evening.
Member: You too.
Rick: Bye bye.
