Tools to Create an Affiliate Marketing Site

In this session, we discuss what tools can be used to create an affiliate marketing site that will display an advertisement for a period of time. The easiest way to do it is by using the AdRotate Plugin, we also discuss other features of this plugin that could be essential for your records and tracking.

Okay and so then finally tonight we’re going to talk about a question that Gary has asked me about. Gary has an idea of an affiliate marketing site. Essentially what he wants to do is to set up advertising partnership with companies that have products that they are selling to their site of a specific style of specific nature and then he wants to advertise those products for a short period of time for his site, like for a week at a time and then he features twelve products each week and he cycles each week or few days a new set of products. So then the question is, what tools you use in order to accomplish that?

There’s a lot of different ways that you could do it but I think the easiest way to do it would be to use a plugin called Ad Rotator. Ad Rotator is a plugin in WordPress Plugin Repository and it do a really nice job actually of letting you know how many clicks a particular item gets. In fact we can see an operation on my site here. I use Ad Rotator for the affiliate advertising I have in my sidebar, right. If you go to my blog I have this little bit of advertising that seats right here, right?

This piece of advertising is managed by this plugin called Ad Rotator. I decided I had too many ads in the site and so I pulled off ads that I thought didn’t really produced very good sales. So I took them off and then I really left on the set of ads that would result in decent sales. And what this does though is it shows you how many impressions have been made of the image, how many impressions today those have been of that image, how many clicks there have been and how many clicks today. You can see that nobody today has clicked on those any affiliates ads. There only been 34 impressions of the ads.

So people aren’t really going to the blog, people are looking at pages that don’t have affiliate advertising on them primarily. Because I may have had 34 impressions today if we look at my analytics, let’s see… look at analytics for a day. Okay let’s just pick today. There we go…apply. There have been 635 visits at 2,031 page views. So 2,031 page views on my site today so far, but only 34 that have resulted in display. SO it’s not…in any case, but you can see though is how many times this stuff has been displayed, how many times people have clicked on them, and you can a fairly good idea of what your real value, what the really valuable ads are.

Now these have been going for quite some time right? But if you’ve got a high traffic site that people are looking at ads and clicking it off to other things off of these ads, then this can be helpful to you because you can see what ads people are clicking on and ads people aren’t clicking on, which gives you a little bit information since you are going to be selling somebody else’s products. You’re not really selling somebody else’s product, what you’re doing is referring someone else. You’re referring people, your readers, and your viewers to somebody else’s site.
This will help you understand how many people have been referred to those sites. And then you know how many sales you generate off those sites and you can see the difference. And so you’ll know what kind of rate of abandon we have and that kind of thing. Though it’s a useful data I think, you know if you’re going to be in an affiliate advertiser then it’s a useful set of the way to capture the data.

The other thing it does though it gives you the ability to lay it out. So the facts that I have these sitting here like this and this one here and this one here. That’s all based on the layout that you can create with Ad Rotator and you can create multiple versions of widgets to use like this. You don’t have to be 125 x 125 squares, you know they could be as big or as small as you want them to be. And so if you are laying them out, you can easily lay them out similar to a product where you would have an image and a description that would go along, that would go together. So that’s one way you could do it.

Another way you could do is assuming that your product is going to have a product image, you could simply place the products inside of your content and you can have a little description beside them. You know, this site that I created for this new class that I’m going to be teaching does something similar to that.

If you could imagine for a moment that this is a product and this is a product description, you don’t really have to do anything. You can do this without CSS or anything else simply by using the visual editor. You place the image in, you place the text beside it and I do have plenty of videos showing you how to use these things, including one that I record this morning for somebody else who asked the same kind of question.

So you know, the tools that you would use to lay it out is really pretty simple. Whether you use a system like this where your product and your product description are stack like this or you’re use something like this where your products are in some kind of a grid. These tools are fairly simple and straight forward and I do have a set of videos on how to use Ad Rotator so you could watch those and the video I did on how to use Ad Rotator in a sidebar like this. But you could just easily use Ad Rotator inside the content area instead.

Now the thing about Ad Rotator, it says “rotator”and it can actually rotate images. I could have 20 images that fit in this 6 image space and what it would do is, it would rotate based on weight that I gave it. It would rotate these things around. And it would cycle essentially the 30 different ads in this 6 ads spot. So it does have that rotating ability but there’s no reason on how to pass rotate.

This little plugin buddy ad right here has its own widget, it doesn’t rotate at all. It just sits there and it easily just sits there. I mean, you don’t have to do anything, it’s not going to do anything, it’s not going to rotate, it’s just going to capture data and you’ll know how many times people click off on this to go to someplace else, it would go to the advertiser.

Now, you know, once upon a time Gary you asked me about shipping. Whether or not you should use shop for this, but really you’re not doing any of that with this you don’t need to use a shopping cart for this. You’re not doing product port filming yourself, what you’re doing is your advertising somebody else’s product and you’re directing readers on your site to someone else’s site to make the purchases and that other person is giving you credit for giving you a commission.

This link share was an example that you gave off something that you are part of. You know, I have my linkshare because of that very limited number of things that I’m interested in, in having affiliates for. Aweber does its own thing and Thesis and Scribe are both handled by share-a-sale which is another link system. Then BlueHost has its own and WP eStore and WP eMember do their own. And so plugin bay does its own, so you know, most of these… I only really have one service that I use in that share-a-sale.

But you know, I mean if you can imagine a layout with ads, you can use Ad Rotator to do that. But if you can imagine a layout with ads you don’t need Ad Rotator because the companies are going to give you ads anyway, it’s going to come with an advertising banner already and you can just easily take this advertising banner and place it in the middle of the page.

In fact, I bet your website can figure out various hosting companies, I think I have an example of that right here. It’s probably the last place I have a Hostgator affiliate ad. This is just an affiliate ad sitting next to a description, each one of these affiliates ads were given to me by the hosting company and I just set them in there as an image beside the text very similar to the way I’ve describe aligning image and text in other videos and the way I showed this morning in terms of aligning images and text set of this.

It’s essentially what you want to do. The mechanics of what you want to do is actually very easy and it doesn’t require shop and it doesn’t require any importing product. It doesn’t require dealing and shipping, it doesn’t require any of that kind of stuff. It really only requires you to develop affiliate relationships with services where you can pick advertisers and you physically place their ads on your site. You can use a tool like I do with Ad Rotator so that you can track statistics or you can use just this without any tool whatsoever. You’re just using content editor and just place the stuff in the content.

Now I think the tough thing that you’re going to face is getting people come to your site. Because you know there are lots and lots and lots of affiliate marketers out there. And they go a lot of effort that has text in their site that draws people to their affiliate products. That’s probably what you have to do as well, you’ll end up most of your work is to create content for that site that draws people to it because without content, nobody’s going to come.

You know, google is not going to return your site as a result for a product. If I was advertising on BlueHost, we’ll just use BlueHost, Inmotion, Hostgator as an example. If I was trying to do what you’re doing here and if somebody searches for BlueHost they’re never going to find my site searching for BlueHost because BlueHost already provides plenty of information on their site and people are going to go to their site rather than my site right?

People look at these ads not because they search for BlueHost and found me, they look at the ads because they search for something else and found me. And that’s what you’re going to be dealing as well. You have to find what your content is that drives people to your site that google will search for and find and when you configure that content piece out, then you know how people are going to come to your site. The mechanic of doing that is very simple and won’t require shopping cart, doesn’t even require plugin, you can really do it entirely without a plugin.

I’m trying to place 12 images approximately 450 x 450 pixels on a body of a website. You know, you’re not going to get more than two of them side by side. If you’re going to have 12 of them you’d have 2 wide and 6 tall. Placing them side by side is really simply a matter of…let’s see, where are my site go here? You know, it’s really just a matter of inserting the image and then telling the image what you want to do when you insert.

You tell it whether or not you want it to be left aligned or I mean that’s something you would do in this case right? You would specify alignment for the image so that one could stack up beside another. And then you would just specify some margin so that they won’t butt right up against each other, that’s all it would be to that. I do have a nice batch of videos on how to insert images and in four weeks I will be redoing a significant section of that in the new class, showing how to put new images in a page and how to align them up properly so we’ll be touching on that topic again. I do have fairly bit of that kind of stuff about it right now and I can point it.
