This is the tenth in a series of live lessons on using WordPress and Thesis as a Content Management System (CMS). In this case study we are creating a community library website. In this lesson we continue to create our custom post meta. We add a select box for adding the post meta.
The Verve Meta Box Plugin is no longer available. As a replacement we are suggesting the Types Plugin.
Rick: So what we’re going to do next is we’re going to move on to Part 10 of our you know, series on creating the community library website and Part 10 is going to be really essentially, a follow up on Part 9. And that is you know, completing what we had worked on earlier which was let’s see… we had earlier done some of the… oh my gosh. I’m getting old and so my mind goes blank. The custom fields, the custom post meta…we have configured some of that and I hadn’t done it right… entirely right, at least on the last week. So we’re going to take this on again just for a moment.
And Pam sent me her revised custom post meta layout and I’m going to do that whole thing here but we are going to make a couple of changes here. And so in terms of circulation time, we’re going to just delete this one and then we’re going to create a new one that is a select. And in the select, let’s see… in the select, we’re going to call this field, circulation time and we’re going to add a field and then we’re going to add values. And so what we do here is we click to add a comma separated list of values and so we’re going to say 14 days, 7 days, and what was the other one? Library use only, I think is what she said. Let me just check here. Was that library use only, Pam? Oh I don’t have your microphone on again. Was that library use only?
Pam: Yes. The other one was custom because sometimes, we’ll be checking out a Thesis curriculum that will be used for months.
Rick: Okay. 14 days, library use only, and custom. Okay so I guess I could just… into there. And then, give me one more. What was the… was location, no it wasn’t location, was it?
Pam: I think so. I’m not at my site. I probably have to catch up but…
Rick: Did you take location? I mean, we used to… location was one of these taxonomies. Did you take location out of the taxonomy and move it into the custom post meta?
Pam: Just a moment, I need to check here. Checking my site for meta…yes, I did put location into the meta also…
Rick: Do you also have it in the catalog?
Pam: What do you mean?
Rick: Well, is it also a custom taxonomy?
Pam: I didn’t think so. Maybe I’m confused.
Rick: Well, go down to Manage Taxonomies on yours real quick and just look over here and see if… what custom taxonomies you have.
Pam: Okay, just a second. I’ll look in here. Looks like I haven’t created any.
Rick: Oh, you didn’t have any custom taxonomies.
Pam: That’s correct.
Rick: Okay well, so I think we’re going to… for the purpose of this, I mean, you don’t have to use custom taxonomies if you don’t want to. But I think for the purpose of this lesson, we’re going to go ahead and stick with the custom taxonomies that I created. And so…yeah. Because figuring out how to import this information is going to be partially be based on this question of taxonomies. So because that’s what we’re going to… once we move on to the next part of this, that’s what we’re going to do is import the data which is going to take most of the rest of the day here, really. But if we come back down to custom post types… I’m sorry, the meta boxes… come back over to the meta boxes, that was the one thing I wanted to demonstrate was how to include day values here inside of circulation time so that when we come over and look at the catalog and if we look at one of these books I’ve already imported, you can see that… you can select… oh, look at that. I must have… oh look at that. I’ve failed to put a comma in there. I put a period instead which is of course, problematic. So what we really wanted to do here was put a comma and you definitely want to get this stuff right the first time because afterwards, it’s not happening. Okay so let’s go down to this one then and now okay… 7 days, 14 days, library use only, custom. Okay, that’s good. And so now what we’re going to do is… you can see actually that I successfully imported about 250 books or 250 pieces of media content. And as in the process of attempting to you know, prepare of this meeting and so we have a whole bunch of that stuff in here already. But…
