Good afternoon everybody and welcome to this special seminar on how to create a magazine style blog site with Thesis 2. This is anticipated to be a 3-week seminar. In week 1, we’re going to talk about how to organize the site and we’ll take some steps to reorganize the Baby of Color website that we’re going to be working on.
In the following two weeks, we’ll be working on using Thesis 2 and creating custom templates for different subjects and categories and coming up with different ways of displaying the blog posts in a magazine style way.
The Magazine Style Development Site
We are looking at the babyofcolor.com, this is what we’re working on but babyofcolor.net is the development site for the babyofcolor.com site. So we’ll be switching back and forth between the two of them.
The babyofcolor.com is a magazine-style information site where the authors and editors wish to display articles of interest for really, the full range of family life or at least a full range of family life with children through teenagers with a particular focus on pregnancy and on very young children, babies and toddlers. They want information that’s available to mothers, content that’s going to be useful to them.
Business Purpose of the Magazine Style Site
The business purpose for the site is to gain add revenue through placing ads on the site with the assumption and hope that people will click on those ads and thus generate revenue for them.
How the Site is Organized
This site has a number of authors and they have a bunch of contributors that are ready to produce articles for them and they have a fairly well-developed visual style and in fact, this is right now is in Thesis Classic. This has a number of main topics, Planning, Pregnancy, Babies and if you switch to the various topics here, you can see that the graphics end up changing.
Visual Elements of the Site
So you have graphics change and then you’re going to have a slider change and you’re going to have additional menus in here so Babies looks like one. Pregnancy has a different color scheme and different stuff. Kids again, has a different color scheme, different images, different slider, different menus.
So, there are a number of different things that need to change based on where you are on the site and that is relatively unique. Your standard blog site doesn’t do that, it’s a big magazine style site like this.
Where to Find the Recorded Videos for this Case Study
A question has been asked a few times here is, “Is this being recorded?” Yes, this is being recorded and it will be made available on the site in the next few days.
Since it’s three-weeks long, I’m going to try to have each week up on the site before the next week’s session so that people can catch up with this. It will be found here under Case Studies, Create a Magazine Style Blog Site with Thesis 2. It’s this case study right here without an icon at the moment. So that’s where you’ll be able to find it probably by Friday of this week.
So, that’s what we’re doing here, what makes this complicated is the way in which things are going to change up, the content and color schemes and all that sort of thing are going to change depending upon the subject matter. And we’re going to work through the process of doing that all using WordPress and Thesis here in the next three weeks.
