Next in this lesson on Integrating Your WordPress and Thesis Website with Google we are going to set up a Google Analytics account.

Sign Up or Sign in for Google Analytics

The easiest way to do that is to just search for google analytics. Here it is on the top page, click on it and then you can either sign up or sign in. I’m going to go to sign in because I already have an account created.

Create An Account

If this is the first time you’ve ever done this then you’ll see a different screen. You’ll see a screen more like this that is all empty. The first thing you want to do in that case is set up an account.

So you’ll create a new account. I’m going to call the new account “Tutorial”. Then I’m going to call it “BYOB Tutorial”. I’m going to set this up on my demonstration site rather than on the site that we’re creating because this is the real one anyway. Now I’ll add my website URL.

Then you choose a category and for this one “jobs and education” is what I want. It’s the US, pacific time zone and yes to this. I’m going to click “get tracking id”.

Now once you have this account set up, you can add different websites to it. You don’t have to have one account for each website. We have an error, it says default URL is invalid. It’s because of the http is there.

Tracking ID

So now, “get tracking id”. Then accept the terms and conditions of it. And here is your tracking id. You don’t need the script because Thesis already has this script built into it and all it requires is this tracking id.

So we copy that and come back over to our website. Go to Thesis and Thesis Home. And then under the Site Menu there is this Google Analytics. All you have to do is click on that and paste that in place. We’ll enable display features and we’ll save Google Analytics.

Now what we’re going to do is reload this and see if the script is actually added. So I’ll view the page source and we’re going to scroll down here looking for…well, let’s search for that. Search for UI number. Let’s inspect which often clears the cache, do it again. Now we’ll view the page source again.

We still don’t have it loaded. I’m not sure why that’s the case. Maybe I didn’t save it. I’ll load it one more time. Sometimes this happens.

We’re not going to show anything now. Instead we’ll come over to site and tracking scripts. And come back over here to Analytics and grab the tracking script. And then the script…I want HTML head.

I’m going to go to head scripts and I’m going to paste it there. Now let’s reload it. And then view page source and here we are now. This is our Google Analytics object. That’s what we were looking for and it’s all ready to go.

Next we are going to go on a tour of Google Analytics.
