The next thing we are going to do is install and configure the BYOB Thesis Footer Widgets Plugin. Remember from this site here, we’ve got this Footer and we have these three things going on in the footer. These are all Footer Widgets inside the Footer Widgets Plugin and that’s what we’re going to work on right now. We can close that page and you can see it’s empty on the current site.

Download BYOB Thesis Footer Widgets Plugin from Facebook Fan Page

The way you get the BYOB Thesis Footer Widgets Plugin is by going to our Facebook Fan Page, facebook.byobwebsite. Our Facebook page brings you to our wall and over here on the left hand side is Fan Central and this is the place where I have a bunch of stuff like videos and in particular, our plugins.

If you select that plugins here, you’ll find a video that describes what you can do with this plugin. You’ll find a link to download the plugin and you’ll find a tab widget here which will show you other continuing videos on how to use the plugin. I’m not going to show you everything you can do with this plugin.

All I’m going to show you is the minimum that we need to do in order to accomplish what our task is. Once you’ve downloaded this plugin, by all means watch the rest of the videos on how to use it. These videos are also located on the site under Member Benefits and Plugins. You have to get the plugin from Facebook but if we go to Thesis Footer Widgets Plugin, I do have all of the instructional videos here on the site on how to use it.

Install and Activate the Plugin

We’re going to download the plugin by selecting that, we’re going to install it by using this Add New routine, upload and we’re going to choose that zipfile from the place it was downloaded. Go to downloads folder and let’s look for the zipfile,,there it is. Select, open and no unzipping in this case. No unzipping, no FTP, just choose the zip file from your computer and install it.

This won’t work if it’s not in a zip format so you have to choose the zip version. If you have unzipped it for some reason, you need to zip it back up in order for this to work. We’ll go ahead and activate the plugin. That plugin shows up down here under BYOB Thesis Plugins, it’s called the Footer Widgets Plugin.

Widget Rows and Columns

The Footer Widgets Plugin will actually enable you to create 3 rows of widgets and each widget row can have up to 5 widget columns in it. You could actually have up to 15 widget areas in this Footer if you so choose.

In this case, what we’re going to do is to have only 1 footer row that only has 3 widget columns. This layout area shows you generally what you’re looking at when you make those settings. If we go to the site and refresh it, you’re going to see those widget areas are now on the site. Footer Row 1 – Widget Column 1, Footer Row 1 – Widget Column 2 and Footer Row 1- Widget Column 3. They’re sitting there waiting to have widgets added to them.

Specify a Width for the Footer Row

By default,if you don’t specify a width for the footer rows, they just become equal widths and for the time being we’re going to leave them that way. If you look over under Appearance and Widgets, you can see we have now added these widget areas to this sidebar section. We have Footer Row 1 – Widget Column 1, Footer Row 1 – Widget Column 2, and Footer Row 1 – Widget Column 3. Each one of those is now a widget area into which you can drag and drop a widget.

Notice that when we added the NextGEN Gallery, what we did was we added a couple of new widgets that NextGEN created so there was a slideshow widget, gallery widget and a RSS widget that will allow somebody to subscribe to your image RSS feed if that was of any interest to you. You have those new widgets sets that have been created.

Typical Margin Settings

If we come back over and take a look at the Footer Widgets Plugin, you can see that you can specify widget column, padding and margins and these padding and margins will be applied to each of the widget columns equally. Then you can create a customized widget background for each of the widget columns although each widget column would have the same background. Nevertheless, you can have a background for the widget column in that row.

You can also change a few other things about each individual widget column. You can specify a width, text alignment and you can adjust margins and these adjustments would override a margin setting that happened, this is the typical margin setting.
