Next we’re going to learn how to upgrade Thesis Theme. We’re back here at thesiscss.com and the version of Thesis Theme we are currently using is version 1.8. We’re going to upgrade today to version 1.8.4 and the way we’re going to do that is by using FileZilla. Let’s connect to that site, wp-content and themes, you see we’ve got Thesis 1.8 but that’s it.
Upgrade Thesis Theme Using FileZilla
What we’re going to do now that we’ve transferred all this 1.8 over to here is we’re going to take our 1.8.4 there and let’s go by name this time, copy it, come back over to themes, paste it, I’m going to unzip here just like we did before and extract to here.
Copy Custom Folder
Before I get too far, I’m going to copy the custom folder from Thesis 1.8 and paste it in the Thesis 1.8.4. It’s in this custom folder that I have all of my customizations and ordinarily I’d also have some thumbnail images and stuff like that in there but obviously, I didn’t use it that way. Nevertheless, what you want to do is take your custom folder from your previous installation of Thesis Theme and put it in your new installation of Thesis Theme. Then we just take Thesis 1.8.4 and we upload it back to our website.
The other way that you could do this is automatically install Thesis 1.8.4 and just copy the custom folder from the old file to the new on your site which is the way I do it sometimes as well but I didn’t want to show you this way. This is the more conventional way.
Activate New Version of Thesis
Now we go back down to Appearance and Themes and Thesis 1.8.4 is going to show up as an option. We’re going to activate that option and we can take a look at our site and see whether or not anything failed. Sometimes, people notice failure and obviously it didn’t happen here, nothing failed here, it’s all working just fine.
Fixing Upgrade Failures
Sometimes that’s not the case and when there is a failure, the way you solve this is to come back over to Thesis Design Options and hit Save. What that does is it rewrites the Layouts CSS and Custom CSS files and in that process of rewriting, it will restore things that might have failed in the ordinary upgrade process but we didn’t have that problem here, we went from 1.8 to 1.8.4 without any problem whatsoever.
