Welcome back to Part 4 of Lesson 14 in the Build Your Own E-Commerce Website tutorial series. In the fourth part of this lesson we are going to set up and configure Google Analytics for our ecommerce website.
First, we need to go to our Google account page for our ecommerce website. I’m going to open this up in a new tab and type in gmail, and then go to this new Gmail account I created which was thesisestore and sign in. So that brings me to my Gmail account but I really want I to go to my Google Account Settings. So come over here to the Web and to Settings and go to Google Account Settings.
You can see I don’t have Google Analytics set up there. So we’ll search for google analytics and go down here and click on that link. Then it asks the question, are we New to Google Analytics? and we’ll just go ahead and say yes and Sign Up Now. So we already have an account. If you don’t have an account you need to create the account but since we do we’re just going to sign in here – hit Sign In.
Add a New Account
Then hit Sign Up. Now with our new account for our ecommerce website we’re going to start at the very beginning and that is, the Website’s URL is www.estore14.byobwebsite.com, and the Account Name will be that. The time zone here is the United States in Pacific Time and Continue. My Last Name is Anderson, Rick, United States and Continue. Go ahead and agree to the Terms of Service and create a new account.
Add Tracking Code to the Site
Now we need to add this tag or this script to our ecommerce website. We’re going to use the Standard tag, you could use the Advanced or the Custom but for the time being I just want to use the Standard tag. Copy that script and then come over to the Dashboard of our website (in this case Thesis eStore Lesson 14). Come down to Thesis, Site Options and then under Stats and Software/Scripts, under Stat and Tracking Scripts, expand that and this is where you’ll place your Google Analytics tracking information, right there.
We have just pasted that code that we got there. Now we’ll go ahead and save that tracking code, come back over here to this page that we were at and then go ahead and say Save and Finish.
Verify Site Ownership
Now we have this new account set up inside of email@example.com; we have the account www.estore14.byobwebsite.com with this as our tracking code. Now this little thing right here means that it has not had a chance yet to verify the site. So select Edit and then up here at the top of our Edit screen check the status –and it can take up to 24 hours for this status to change. If after 24 hours you don’t have a little green check right here then post something on the forum and we’ll see if we can help you figure it out. But generally speaking it’s not necessarily instantaneous, sometimes it is. In this case obviously it hasn’t been, but in my troubleshooting I learned it can take up to 24 hours for this to resolve itself.
That wraps up Part 4 of Lesson 15 of the Build Your Own E-Commerce Website tutorial series.
