Welcome back to Part 5 of Lesson 15 of the Build Your Own E-Commerce Website tutorial series. In this part of the lesson we are going to install and configure Webmaster Tools for our ecommerce website.
If you’re still on your Google Analytics page, go over to My Account and it takes you back to here. Now you can see the Analytics exists there. We’re going to search for webmaster tools. We’re using Google Webmaster tools so click on that and sign in to Webmaster Tools. We haven’t really installed it yet but we’re going to start there now.
So again it brings you up to Google Account and we’ll sign in to our ecommerce website’s account. We are brought to this blank page. First, we have to Add a site – www.estore14.byobtutorial.com – select Continue. Then we’re going to select an HTML file to upload from our server.
Get Ownership Confirmation File
Here is our HTML file, verification file; select this and then we’ll save it and I’m going to show it in my folder here, and I’m going to cut it and then go to my website here on my local machine – tutorial site, estore, WordPress and it’s going to be on the same level as wp-content so I’ll paste it there.
Upload Ownership Confirmation File for Google Webmaster Tools
Then open up Filezilla – there’s the file. I’m going to upload that file and now you can see it exists. We’ll go ahead and verify it using our browser here. Okay you can see that that worked. We went to that file location – here’s the file name. So they can turn that off and now we select the Verify, and now it brings us to our Dashboard.
Verify Site Ownership for Google Webmaster Tools
Since it brought us to our Dashboard we know that it is in fact verified. Come back over here to Webmaster Tools and you can see that there’s our site, estore.com and it does indicate that has been verified. Obviously the first time you look at this there’s nothing for us to see.
Submit Sitemap for Google Webmaster Tools
But there is one other thing for us to do and that is to load the sitemap for our ecommerce website. So from the Dashboard you can see Submit a Sitemap which is what we’ll do so select that and then there’s our URL and remember it’s sitemap.xml. I’m going to give it a moment to review it.
If we click on Sitemap you can see that it has been downloaded on November 5th, which is today, and that it is 31 URLs that are a part of it and when Google gets around to searching it, Google’s going end up indexing some of those URLs and you’ll see the difference between the URLs that you submitted and the URLs that Google indexed.
That wraps up Part 5 of Lesson 15 in the Build Your Own E-Commerce Website tutorial series.
