This video is part of our old WP eStore Course Go to our Updated WP eStore Course for current videos.

In this last part of the lesson we are going to configure WP eStore product categories. As you probably recall from our first lesson a product category is the organizational grouping of products. For example, in our case it’s going to be books and e-books and all of the book products will go under the category books and all the e-books will go under the category e-books. Remember from part one of this lesson that we will be entering a name, a description, a target URL and a thumbnail. So for each of the WP eStore product categories that we create we will need this information.

If we come back over here to our Dashboard, scroll down to the store at the bottom and we select Categories we are brought to our Manage Categories screen. You can see that there are none found and we have an Add Category dialogue here.

Add New WP eStore Product Categories

Let’s add our first one; it’s going to be Books. For our description we’ll say Purchase our award winning books. If you like hard copies this is the place to order them–  any kind of text there at all.

Then you’re going to have the Target URL, we’ll come back over here to our Pages, Our Products here in this case is Books. If we select View we can go copy that URL, come back over here, there’s our URL. Then we need a thumbnail image URL for the category of books. What I generally do is I take one of the thumbnail images from the product and what we’ll do is we’ll come up here to Media and we’ll right click on Library and we’ll say Open link in new tab and then we will look for the right thumbnail. If we select Edit that and we select the file URL and copy it and then we come back over here and paste it in Thumbnail Image URL, now this category has a thumbnail. We save that and let’s create our next one.

This one will be an E-Book, some placeholder text for our e-books. Again that Target URL is going to be the E-Book product page, we’ll drop back over here and view our E-Books product page and grab that URL. Come back over here, paste that, we’ve got that done.

For our Thumbnail Image URL we’re going to do exactly the same thing. We’ll go to our Library. We’ll pick a different one this time. Copy that, come back over here, paste that, hit Save and now we have created two. We’ve created the category of Books and of E-Book, we’ve got a little bit of description here and we’ve got IDs. Category 1 is Books; Category 2 is E Books.

If we go to Products you can see it doesn’t appear to have changed. If we go to Books that isn’t changed and E-Books hasn’t changed either. The reason is that we’ve created these categories in WP eStore and we given information for them but we have not yet put that information on our Catalog pages. That’s something we’ll be doing in Lesson 5.  That concludes our WP eStore Configure Product Categories Lesson.
