A lot of the pages produced for marketing purposes....(ie: Sign-up "Thank you" pages, pdf download pages, etc.) should not be included in the sitemap.

Can anybody point me to a vid or discussion regarding options for how to systematically manage this?

The Google XML Sitemaps plugin allows sitemap exclusion based on:

1. Category

2. Individual pages or posts.

The category exclusion could be used, but only if all these pages are posts rather than pages, I think.

It seems a bit risky and redundant to think that I will remember to update that plugin settings every time I make a page that I don't want in the sitemap.

I'm sure that Rick has discussed this, but I'm not sure where.

Thanks,

Bryan

If you are using either Thesis or Genesis, each page has a Robots section where you can mark the pages No-Index.  That is the easiest most surefire way to do this.

Hi Rick,

This one came back up...I assume that a page marked "no index" should not show up on the sitemap...yes?

http://thehandandfootchiroprac.....itemap.xml

The following page does appear in the sitemap.

http://thehandandfootchiroprac.....test-page/

However, I checked no index and here is the metatag from the page source.

<meta name="robots" content="noindex, noodp, noydir" />

I think that I have the sitemap plugin set up just like you show it the videos.

Thoughts?

Bryan

You can also exclude the pages from the sitemap.  However, Google will respect the noindex tag regardless of what the sitemap says.
