Trouble Figuring Out Where To Change Copyright On Genesis Site

Rick..

I am having a difficult time in figuring out where to edit the Copyright info on this Genesis site. (Lower right hand footer area)

I was not the one who originally made the website and only, from time to time, get called upon to make edits of some sort.

It seems that editing the copyright should be a super easy to do edit -- but there is not an actual widget area for this right hand section of the footer for some reason, so the data must be hard coded into the site.

I can tell that the designation is  'div-class=copyRight'.

There is not a Custom CSS file on the site. The original developer added a little section in the Style.css file that references some Custom CSS '.copyRight' - but there is no reference there about the actual date to change and correct.

The site uses a Genesis plugin called Genesis Simple Edits -- and I checked there to see if there was some reference there to the copyright. There is a reference to [footer_copyright], but if this is the location where the edit would be made for the copyright date, there is not obvious place to make that edit.

Rick, this is the Genesis site you have helped me figure out a couple other things about in the past that were weird, or I should say were not set up by the original developer in a 'standard manner'. I am not sure if this is another situation where something has been set up a bit 'non-standard', or if I am just lost on how to find where to make the edit.

Any tips you might have would be appreciated.

We might need to look at this together on Wednesday.  However, you could take a look at the functions.php file to see if it is there.  There may also be a footer.php file

Thanks Rick -- I'll take a look at the functions php and see if there is a footer php file before Wed --- and sign up for the Wed AM Q&A if we need to look at it then.

I finally found where to change the copyright date and got it changed to 2015 -- the original person who made the site had interestingly tucked the copyright data in with city, state and zip code info -- not the most obvious place to look for it.

But got the copyright changed and all is good with the site for the moment.

I do have a question about something that came up in the troubleshooting process -- when I tried to open the 'functions.php' file in Netbeans I got a message which I was not sure what to do  --

'functions.php cannot be safely opened with encoding windows-1252
do you want to continue opening it'

Not knowing what, if anything, would happen if I opened the file using Netbeans, I ended up trying to open the 'functions.php' file in Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver did not give me any error message.

Can you advise, for future, if Netbeans should be ok to use in a case such as this? Would Netbeans mess up the file as the message stated? I would prefer to use Netbeans if possible.

This error is probably due to the original file being edited in Dreamweaver or on a Mac.  If you have Dreamweaver and opening in DW makes the error go away then that is a safe fallback option.

That is interesting that if a file was originally made in Dreamweaver it can make an issue like that happen.

For future I may be in trouble if something like this happens however, as I am planning to drop my Adobe CC account that includes Dreamweaver when the annual subscription runs out, and I won't any longer have access to Dreamweaver to be able to try and open a troubled file.Oh well, I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it.

Thanks Rick.

Carolin

I dropped DW sometime ago due to the cost.

I now use Coffeecup, there is a free trial:

Thanks for the tip Keith. I really appreciate it. I am going to try Coffeecup out.

I am with you about the cost of Adobe CC, it is just entirely too costly. After the demise of the Adobe packaged products that you can buy and actually own, and the older version of the packaged version I had was so old it no longer worked on the new Windows OS, I felt I really needed the products and signed up for an annual contract. Next month is my last month on the contract. Despite the fact I have used the Adobe products all the time, there is no way for me to cost justify the high monthly expense, so I have been figuring out other software that will alternatively serve me. I have migrated to Corel for graphic needs, and I will give Coffeecup a try now, thanks for your suggestion. I really appreciate it.

Although, bear in mind that these are the tools of the web design professional.  There are discount sites (and ebay) where you can purchase less expensive boxed versions of photoshop - http://www.ebay.com/bhp/adobe-.....s5-windows

I know Adobe is considered the 'gold standard/industry standard' but it is just so on-going expensive, and you never own it.

I had thought of trying to go the direction you mention, of discount sites, or E-bay, and getting an older packaged Adobe version, and while I am sure many of those sites are really very legitimate with 'good' software, I have had a couple acquaintances try to go that route and ended up getting ripped off with pirated software, so I opted not to try and go that way.

I have been experimenting with the Corel Draw suite of products and have been finding I can open any Adobe file extensions and save anything as Adobe file extensions. Everything I have needed to do, so far, I was able to do. There may be some incompatibilities I'll discover, but I have not yet run into them.

Down the road I might have to re-consider and go back to Adobe, and if so, I'll have to face that issue then. In cutting off the Adobe CC subscription, it's in the interests of always trying to look at keeping business costs pared, and in line, as best as possible.
