While I’m on Agility 3.2 now, my Page and Single skin templates are still as I set them up originally in Agility 2.0.  I wish now that I had changed their names and made them custom skins so that I would have access to the new upgraded default templates.

I know that Agility 3.2 has the ability to restore individual templates to their default state, but I don’t think that’s what I want to do. I think I want to rename them as custom skins so that I can have access to the new upgraded default skin templates.

Question 1: What is the best way to manage this?

Admittedly, I’m having a hard time wrapping my mind around this as I have so many posts and pages. That leads to this second question:

Question 2: It seems like it would be useful to display which skin templates are used for each when All Pages are displayed in Dashboard. Is that possible?

Many thanks!

Question #1 - I would create custom templates for those old templates you wish to retain - for example

  • FIRST create a backup in Skin Editor >> Data Manager
  • Create a custom template called "Old Page"
  • Copy the page template into Old Page
  • Restore the default page template.

Wait to restore the default header until you have completed doing this to all templates.

Question #2 - Yes it is possible to display which template is being used in the admin page.  I use the Admin Columns plugin for this.  You can create a column for custom fields and then choose the _wp_page_template custom field.  I do this all the time at BYOB.

This is an excellent plan and I'm getting organized to execute it.

The second question isn't crucial, but is a handy way for me to stay organized. However, the plugin from AdminColumns.com is returning the text "default" instead of the name of the Agility Skin or Custom Agility Skin.

Can you confirm that this is really the name of the field.  Or, do you see what else could possibly be wrong? Here's two screenshots of my setup:

Are you sure that those pages are using custom templates?  When it says default it means that they are using the default page template.

On a post default means it is using the single template

Thus default stands in for whatever template is the default template.

Note that the terms skin and template refer to entirely different things.

Oh right. I guess my skin is Agility 3.2 and the title of that column should simply be Page Template.

Yes, I’m sure they all say “default” except for the archive page Articles. Here are three specific examples of pages with custom templates:

Title: Take Control of Your Finances . . . uses custom template . . . New Front Page 2b

Frequently Asked Questions . . . uses custom template . . . No Sidebars

Learning Center for Investing . . . uses custom template . . . New Front Page

You are right about that - I'm going to have to do some more checking on that.
