On my website: https://idealconsulting.net/ I get a nonce check error only when trying to save the home page.

It helped but now the update process just hangs up and doesn't complete. I'll try a larger value.

The update process I was referring to was the saving of a change to the Front Page template. At first, I thought that the Saving Template indicator was just hanging but it does eventually turn off. Unfortunately, there has been no change to the template and no error message was generated. In other words, the nonce check error has gone away but I still can't successfully change the Front Page template.

So I assume that you made sure that

  1. you are using a modern version of PHP - preferably PHP 7.0+
  2. you increased your input vars as described in the link above - this probably solves the problem
  3. you checked with your host about the subhosin limits as discussed in the link above
  4. make sure you have sufficient memory for the WP installation.  I recommend 512MB.

If you haven't done these then do them first.

So the next thing you should do is delete all unused boxes and unused templates.  Start with blocks that have lots of child boxes and settings.  If you aren't using it, you should delete it.

Once you've done all of that and it isn't working, post back here.

Thanks Rick,

The Bluehost support guys showed me where to put the php.ini file so that it would take effect and now everything is working again!

I don't know if it matters very much, but one of the support people said he had to revert the PHP version to 5.6 instead of 7 in order to get the php.ini file to work. This sounds fishy to me but I haven't had a chance to try going back to the latest version yet to test it out.
