Hi

Is there a video that shows how to create video playlists and add them to your wordpress site? I am hosting my own videos and also hosting them on Amazon S3 services and use S3FlowShield plugin.

But I do not know how to create a playlist using FlowPlayer (we have a free commercial license as part of the s3FlowShield plugin purchase).

Please help.

Merchant, welcome to the forum.  Unfortuantely S3 FlowShield doesn't support playlists. Also, I haven't yet found a plugin that supports playlists that I like.

Hi Rick,

This is the response from S3FlowShield folks, but I do not have the tech skills to do it:

"Flowplayer does support the ability to create playlists, but S3FlowShield does not do this out of the box.

You would have to create your own Flowplayer embed code with playlist support, then use the [S3URL] shortcode to generate the URLs for each clip (where the file names would go)."

Now I have been able to create playlist using JWPlayer with out of the box straight WordPress functionality for Playlists. Do not know how to do this using Flowplayer.

Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

That one is going to take a little head scratching.  You probably already know that JWPlayer and Flowplayer aren't the same and do things differently.  So what works for JWPlayer won't work for Flowplayer.

I'll think aboiut this one

Hi Rick,

As you can see from this link there are quite a few examples of how to create a playlist for FlowPlayer, its just I do not know how to do this in WordPress:

http://flowplayer.org/plugins/.....ylist.html

http://flowplayer.org/demos/pl.....alist.html

http://churchforallnations.org.....ylist.html

http://flowplayer.org/demos/co.....embed.html

But I am not a techie and so do not know where to put this type of code etc in Wordpress as I think these are for straight html pages?

Hi Rick,

thanks for taking my question tonight, here's the code I adapted from the code I got from S3FlowShield folks to display an image in place of ClicktoPlay (for the amazon s3 bucket videos)

"["S3VIDEO file='yourvideo.mp4' displaymode='overlay' ovwidth='480' ovheight='360' clicktoplay='<img src="http://www.yourdomain.com/wp2/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/cover-3001.jpg" alt="" />'"]"

This code displays the image rather than "Click to Play" and then when one clicks the image the video pops up in the overlay mode.

Now if you can show us how to either put together a gallery or a playlist that would be awesome. I cannot code but can copy and paste it and do minor adaptions.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I have had to put the shortcode in quotes else it does not show up to view only in edit mode will you be able to see the code (as your site is also a wordpress site and I think you also have s3flowshield installed.

I wish I'd have read your post more carefully the first time!  I'd have figured this out much sooner.

In your html view you'll enter something like this:

<div class="playlist-item">["S3VIDEO file='yourvideo.mp4' displaymode='overlay' ovwidth='480' ovheight='360' clicktoplay='<img src="http://www.yourdomain.com/wp2/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/cover-3001.jpg" alt="" />'"]</div><div class="playlist-item">["S3VIDEO file='yourvideo.mp4' displaymode='overlay' ovwidth='480' ovheight='360' clicktoplay='<img src="http://www.yourdomain.com/wp2/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/cover-3001.jpg" alt="" />'"]</div>

Then in your custom.css file you'll create a css class like this

.playlist-item
{
   float:left;
   margin:5px;
}

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the research, but a basic question since I do not know php or java pgmming. Do I create a file called custom.css and just upload it to the themes folder? I am using the basic Twenty Ten 1.2 theme.

So I am not familiar with this so please bear with me.

Unfortunately I don't have any instruction on this site for how to customize Twenty Ten.  Every theme is different, which is why I teach Thesis.  Teaching a single theme gives me the ability to teach a lot of detail, because it is detail specifically for that theme.

So, in order to learn how to customize WordPress in general and Twenty Ten in particular you're going to have to get your hands really dirty.  Twenty Ten is not designed to be customized and any customization you did to Twenty Ten would be lost the moment you upgraded it.

What you're left with is the need to create a child theme for twenty ten and then customize that child theme.

There's no way for me to describe in writing how to do that.  However, if you sign up for one of the live sessions this week I can demonstrate it for you.  In any case you should watch the first four lessons of Customize Thesis Like a Pro because it will prepare you to learn how to code in WordPress.  That's what you are going to be learning - how to code in WordPress from scratch.

It's a lot harder than customizing Thesis and there is no quick cut and paste way to do it.

ok Rick, I will watch those videos but will likely not be able to join your class either this week or next as weekends are more open for me. But will definitely try to make it to one of your evening classes.

thanks for your insight though and I will try out after watching the videos.

My suggestion is that if you need to minimize the amount of code you have to learn then you should move to Thesis.  It is much easier customizing Thesis than it is creating a child theme of Twenty Ten and customizing that.

However, I'll be glad to help you either way.

Hi Rick,

One additional item, I am trying to keep my installation as bare bones as possible and keeping my site fairly out-of-the-box with minimal customizations.

Our membership site uses s2Member plugin and s3Flowshield for videos (which uses Flowplayer). But other than that other plugins I have are an icing on the cake.

Also the main navigation is kept to 3 menu items that way it becomes pretty "idiot proof" if you know what I mean.

It also keeps the user interface simple and when people land on the site they would not get confused just like when you land on google its pretty much a search engine.

My main hesitation in adopting Thesis are:

1. I have to learn it

2. I have to customize it and then test it before I can deploy.

Now we are wanting to take this site which has taken more time than we thought to deploy and do not want to delay the schedule.

But when I do get some free time I will definitely look into this.

I will try and join your class on Wed and if you can possibly show me how to do the basic changes to a custom css file I will give it a shot on my test site.

BTW: I take it you got it to work so could you create a video on this?

You're right it would be an excellent topic for a video.  I'll be glad to demonstrate it if you sign up for one of the Wednesday live sessions.
