We are starting to do research to change our hosting company and I thought this might be a good forum to get information. We have been unhappy with HostGator for a while, and in the last 2 days, I have gotten 34 runtime issue notifications for our site. That is just not acceptable. HostGator told us they had a bot - ugh!

Rick had mentioned Groundspring in a webinar last fall. Any ideas about that one? Or about another company you have had good luck with (not GoDaddy please).

Thanks,

Marcy

Marcy - here is the criteria that I now use for choosing a host:

They absolutely must provide:

  • Easy, free SSL for every site
  • Offer PHP 7.0 or later
  • Deliver http requests over http2

So - at this point NONE of the big boys (that I know of) meet this criteria - Not BlueHost, not HostGator, not GoDaddy, not InMotion Hosting.

So at the moment I can only recommend WP Engine and SiteGround.  There probably are other hosts out there that offer this but I'm not aware of them.

Why are these 3 criteria critical?  Google love & Site Speed.  These 3 things provide both security and speed - which is what google wants.

Note the site speed algorithm has just changed.  Google is now using actual data supplied by the Google Chrome browser for determining speed.

Rick,

I do remember you talking about some of this in one of the Q&A sessions. Thanks for the info. I had 4 photographers recommend SquareSpace, but I know photographers are not looking for these criteria. If I find others that do have them, I'll let you know.

I'll look into those two and see what we decide to do.

Thanks,

Marcy

Marcy, Square Space isn't a hosting company.  They are a website development platform.  No serious business, that relies on its website, uses Square Space or Wix or any of those other platforms as they don't provide what serious businesses need for their websites.

They work for vanity sites and broke businesses who don't know what it takes to have a successful small business website.
