I am going to be converting a website from html to WordPress. This website, financially, needs to be totally independent of any others I'm working on, and this group can't afford much - domain and hosting is about it. So I'm trying to keep everything else simple and free, and am using the Gutenberg plugin so it is ready when that time comes. The current site is desertpipes.org.

So my questions are...

1) Is there a free theme recommendation from anyone where I can still make a decent amount of changes without coding? (Oh, I wish they could afford Thesis and Agility!!!) I know I'll have to do some css, and of course, would like to keep it to a minimum. The look does not have to be the same as it is now.

2) Has anyone use a media library management plugin that they like? This site has a lot of photos, and being able to organize them into subfolders, or categories if necessary, would be great.

Thanks for your help,

Marcy

Marcy, I don't know of any Free themes that can easily be customized without writing code.  However if you find one I will gladly help you with it here on the forum.  You don't need to charge your clients for use of Agility and if you have the Developer version of Thesis you can buy them a client license for $60.

If you are doing the project for love then spend the $60 for love as well and save yourself a ton of time.  The only reason it would ever make sense for you to learn to program another theme is if you were going to continue to do that type of web development in the future.

My concern with using Agility for Desert Pipes is that I'm trying to plan so that in a year or so, if I'm no longer maintaining the Agility websites paid for by my employer, I don't have to change everything again. Or is it better to make it easier now, and then worry about changing again when I need to?

Either way, I'd still like to find a way to manage my media library - any ideas on that front? desertpipes.org, the site I'm converting, is a very photo heavy site (50 years worth of documents and about 25 years worth of photos). I've already optimized all of the photos so I'm ready to upload them.

Thanks,
Marcy

And even though it feels like I am designing/maintaining a lot of websites (4 maintaining, 2 developing), I don't plan on doing more of this in the future. laugh

If you make $3 per hour you would still be money ahead by paying the $60 for a client license.  There is no right answer to "What theme should I use knowing that I won't be supporting it in 2 years".  The whole theme environment will probably be significantly different in 2 years than it is now.

I wouldn't use the media library for this.  I would use the Photo Gallery plugin.  That way you can organize the images by album and upload whole folders of images at a time.

I've been using the Gutenberg plugin and wanted to try to do all the image stuff using those blocks. However, I have found that very difficult to do - I can't link figure out how to link an image to a larger image with either the image or gallery block. I also can't figure out how to link one page to another in the paragraph block. I wanted to like Gutenberg but I'm ready to turn it off!!

I'll look at Photo Gallery. I found several. Are you talking about the one by 10wEb?

Thanks,
Marcy

Yes, that is the one - https://wordpress.org/plugins/photo-gallery/

In terms of Gutenberg - the image handling seems much less intuitive.  However, there must be a way.
