Hi Rick,

I will get the Clean up WP box and the other stuff from my host.

It sounds like I can get the good effects of several skins.  I just have to change to that skin when I make the changes.  For example, color choices will work better in another skin.  I seem to remember that Agility is good for picking colors.  Is Agility another cost?  I am hoping that I will be able to keep the easy to use mobile access of Effectus if I use another skin for the colors.

I like your nav menus from the perspective of clarity.  I don't need two, but I will need two nav menus for my private membership site.  Is it easier to make those preparations now?  I am hoping to just transfer the structure that I make on Tokyohomeopathy.com to the membership site.  The membership site is already registered and has a domain.  How should I think about that?

Tokyohomeopathy is mainly to attract clients and to make appointments with them.  The membership site is to teach homeopathy.  I will put some free educational videos on Tokyohomeopathy, but my intention is to mainly attract students to the other site.  Homeostudy.com.  Right now ellenmadono/homeostudy.com is a sub-site of ellenmadono.com, but eventually, I hope to move it when it is actually working.  The content of Homeostudy will be all Japanese. Also, I am going to need a Japanese tab on Tokyohomeopathy.com.  But I have not figured out the strategy for that.  May just a tab that says Japanese (in characters).

I am keeping the membership site separate from the client attraction site just because having memberships for on one site seems complex to me.  I tried following your directions and I could not be logged in and still work on my client attraction site. As long as I had 2 nav menus, I had this problem.  Is this actually an easy to fix problem?

I don't need the details now, but I do need an effective strategy for a membership site and the need to work in two languages.  The solution needs to be doable for a person who does not know coding. I can add code in a clearly described spot, and replace variables, but my experience stops there.

Best,
Ellen Madono

Ellen, you can only use one skin at a time.  Settings from 1 skin will not port to another.  So when choosing a skin it is important to choose a skin that most closely resembles the site you want.  This is especially true for a person who does not know coding.

Your best bet is either to:

  1. Choose a skin that looks close to what you want your site to look like and then live with that skins limitation.
  2. or Accept that you will need to learn how to customize Thesis.

In terms of a multi-lingual membership site you should look at the WPML plugin to see if it will do what you want to do.  I really don't know how you would write Japanese in WordPress, nor how you would switch back and forth.

It's relatively easy to do that between the romance languages - and languages that share the same character set.  But I have no idea how Japanese fits into that equation.

Hi Rick,

How do I know what different skins look like?  Changing font and their color seems like pretty simple as far as code goes.  At least, I understand the objective and what kinds of code you might use.  I care most about mobile use. I chose Effectus because, at the time, it seemed to be the best choice for mobile.  It also appears to be one of the more complicated ones and one that you rarely talk about in your blog.  That is the main reason that I think about other skins.

Probably, I have to learn to change the nav bar myself and to add an email contact box to my sidebar.   Other plans are membership and selling lecture videos.  But, they will be on a different website. Mobile friendly is still the top priority.

Thanks,

Ellen Madono

Hi Ellen

Most Thesis Skins are Mobile friendly first now. Mainly because of Wordpress and Google.

You can check Thesis Skins demo here : http://diythemes.com/demo/

If you settle on Effectus and feel like you'd needed more instruction I'd be glad to teach a seminar on it.

In fact, pick your skin and if you feel like the resources available to you aren't sufficient - I can teach that skin as well.

Hi Rick,

WHICH SKIN IS BETTER?

Honestly, I could not see much difference between the technical details of the skins.  I like the free skin that comes with Thesis because I like the look of the nav bar.  But, mostly I want a site that other people feel good about going to.  Eventually, I will need to sell video lectures and have a member site.  But, not sure that choice of skin matters for that.

CANNOT UNDERSTAND BOXES

I am still stuck with not understanding the boxes.  I looked at the vidoes on boxes, but I just don't see how I can get the action box.  Right now, all my pages are formated with the action box at the top.  I wanted the action box to be on the landing page only.  Or only on two types of pages.  Now it is everywhere.  Before I could not get it on the landing page, and it was everywhere else.

This story of woe is probably as clear as mud to you.  The bottom line is I do not know how to work those boxes.

I doubt that this problem is worth a whole webinare.  I have a feeling I should set boxes to the default.  I have several boxes that are meaningless to me.  Several that don't work.  So I am not sure what does what.  I know how the boxes are set up.  But, I need to get rid of my early mistakes.

Is there a way to go back to default with just the boxes?

Best,
Ellen

Ellen - when you say you don't understand boxes what you are really saying is you need to learn how to use the skin editor.

I STRONGLY recommend you work your way through these 2 seminars:

Once you've done that you will understand both boxes and how to restore defaults.  Plus you'll know how to back your design up so that if you mess up something you can recover from that mess up.

In terms of skins - you can assume that both my skins (which are included as part of your subscription here) and DIY Themes skins, work equally well on mobile devices.  So then you want to look at their default built in look and arrangement.  Ask your self:

  1. With no customization - how close does this skin look to what I want my site to look
  2. Does this skin have unique features that I want
  3. Do I want something that I don't see in these skins?

I have lots of tools to help you customize skins - BUT, before you choose a skin you should know how much customization it will need to get where you want.

Hi,

I am studying the two lessons that you so kindly provided.  Yes, this is the way to teach. Thank you.

I am also looking at skins

I see the Flex has a photo or video landing page that might be good for a site where people don't tend to read the site pages.  They just email (or for the most part don't email).  Flex is promoted as good for e-commerce.  I want to sell lessons. That is e-commerce.  It also says that it provides no two column blog page.  That is not good for me because I have lots of links to all sorts of blog content.  A few people reach me because they are interested in a blog page.  So, is Flex out for me?

I just published something about this. But, you should consider using Rick "BYOB Agility 3.2", skin so you will be on top of things.

Thank you Pierre,

Agility nude is free to premium members and has videos showing how to set it up, so I am not doing uninformed actions basically in the dark.  I will be starting all over again, but my current set up is really simple.  Sounds good.  Rick has classes on membership sites and setting up selling of stuff.  So, hopefully, I will be able to follow him.

Ok, I am going to finish studying those lessons that he suggested then focus on changing skins.  Seems like another hurdle to jump, so I am depending on your good will.  Thank you for letting me know.  I really do not want to spend my life jumping these hurdles.

Best,

Ellen

Hi,

I have spent the day listening to the beginner courses that Rick suggested. It is clear that I should just upload Agility and switch to it.  Is there a lesson on that?  I mean is it tricky?  Do I need to backup first?  Or just follow the steps as they appear when I begin the process.

Or is it going to take me days to get my site back to a working state? And it will be very tricky. In that case, maybe I should upload to my other site just so my main site for attracting clients is not disrupted.

Best,
Ellen

Ellen,  there are extensive videos on how to use Agility.  However - WHY are you switching?  What is it about your current website that you don't like that Agility solves?  What is your plan for those big forms on your pages?

I would leave your live site alone and install Agility on another site.

Now that your live site is running much more quickly you can improve the readability of your menu by adding the following code to your Custom CSS

@media (min-width: 897px){
  .nav {
     font-size: 18px;
     line-height: 24px;
  }
  .nav li ul.sub-menu li {
     width: 250px;
  }
}

Otherwise I would leave the existing site alone while you do whatever redesign work you want on another site.

Hi Rick,

Thank you for the code to solve the menu problem.  It looks better now.

Since people looking at my site could have visual debilities, I changed the font from 18 px to 20 px.  Somewhere in all those lessons that I went through yesterday, you said something about helping people with visual debilities.  There is something more I could do?

You must have looked at the speed of my site.  It is better.  I remember that Agility does something to make sure the images are the right size.  That also seems to have something to do with loading speed.  Since I will be loading more photos as I write more blog, I am not sure if I should worry about that.

I was originally talking to you about changing hosts since the Positive SSL : etc is costly at my current host.  Once I start doing video lessons, the site will not be heavier I assume because they will be located on Vimeo.  If there is any reason to change hosts now, I would like to do it before I have problems.  I will place the discussion about host changing at the bottom of this email.

---

I thought that if I change to Agility, I would get more out of your site since most of the detailed instructions are about Agility.  Honestly, other than that, I am not sure that it would matter.

I am not at all sure that I understand Effectus, or any other skin does besides changing the style or the video landing page of Flex.  So, I will take you up on the idea of doing a video about Effectus.  I am sure I am not the only person who feels very unsure of their knowledge.

I am about to tinker with my boxes based on the video that I watched on that subject.  If I get lost or stuck, let's start there.  If I got what I need out of existing videos, let's go there.

When you go back and forth between the windows on thesis content and skin editor, honestly I feel dizzy.  It is a video, so I can stop it.  I will work on it and see if I can catch up to what you are saying by imitating you. Now that I know a little bit more, maybe I can work in a way that opens up more understanding.

So, I am going to delete my box templates and restart them.  But, since I deleted some boxes, maybe I should reload Effectus.

Best,

Ellen

======

From a previous question about changing hosts to speed up my site.

Hi Rick,

I talked to my host and found out that there is some cost involved.  What do you recommend?The total cost is from $120-$477.  I have no intention to pull in lots of money, so an expensive plan would not make sense. I just want to be noticed by google.

Next month I renew my site and stuff like backup and security plans are also renewed.  So, if I am going to change sites, this is a good time.  I assume I would just download my three wordpress sites (one is not public) and then re-intall them in another host.  A host that you know well makes sense to me.

Best,
Ellen

Since people come to my site because of long tail descriptions homeopathic treatment of specific medical conditions, I would like to make a 4 column page that automatically appears due to choice of a tag when I write the description.  You describe this in https://www.byobwebsite.com/answers/choose-the-right-thesis-2-1-skin/   I don't need agility for this?

Students will no doubt use this kind of 4 column description to choose courses, but also students will be interested in other tagged subjects.  I assume that I can make any number of this kind of page.

Also, I want to have a contact email under the Nav Menu tab "çontact us"  I am using wufoo.com  Probably because the email already appears in the action box at the top of the site, it can't be used again on a page.  Zoho is 2 dollars per month.  Is there another email service like wufoo that is free?

The call to action box seems too big for my taste.  Also, there are probably not enough pixels in the current photo used for the box.  I have to change that.  How do I look up the necessary pixel density?

Do other blogs have a photo (that is responsive) and used for that background to the site.  The tiles that I chose seem too busy to me.  I would prefer a single responsive photo of trees and a river.  Something like that.  Not tiles.
