Having heard of Yoast but knowing nothing about it, I watched a webinar about it. Even the free version looks like it would really help from an SEO standpoint. So I presented it to the owner of one of my websites, and he is very skeptical. He thinks all Yoast wants is for you to buy the upgrade version to use with e-commerce.

Any thoughts on Yoast would be appreciated, good, bad, or indifferent. Or other suggestions instead of Yoast.

Thanks,
Marcy

Hi

Yoast can be an asset for very complex web sites, but most of the SEO can be done in Thesis.

Chris' view at DIY - it is not needed.

More plugins = more trouble.

Make sure you backup before upgrading and making changes.
Best results when one question per thread, link to site, version of WP, Thesis and skin.
http://www.kwjassociates.co.uk - Wordpress 5.1.1 – Thesis 2.8.5 - Focus

*** Biggest cause of problems is now the cache, whether it is a plugin, the browser or your host's server. ***
*** Do not edit Skin and Editor CSS - make changes using Custom CSS. ***
*** Do not edit core files - make changes using custom.php or master.php. ***

Thesis handles 95% of the "hard" SEO tasks for a typical text based website.  Yoast adds "soft" SEO tasks and 100% of "hard" tasks.

The hard tasks Thesis fails to provide are custom titles and meta descriptions for custom post type and custom taxonomy archive pages.  If don't need custom titles and descriptions for those pages then Thesis has you 100% covered.

In terms of soft SEO, Yoast can add meta tags for Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest and it can analyze your content for good SEO practice.  This includes image names, alt text, keyword density and use of keywords in headings and meta tags.

It can also provide 2 other elements that would otherwise require additional plugins.   Those are XML Sitemaps and breadcrumbs.

If you have videos that you host that you want to show up in search results then you need a Video sitemap.  Or image sitemaps, or audio sitemaps.  Yoast has addons that will provide those.

The commercial version of Yoast is an excellent tool if you need something to make sure that your SEO intents match your content.
