I spent a lot of time trying to get the search box in the same line as the menu - finally had to give up because I had to add another item to the menu and it got too wide. So, I moved it up to the widget area in the header. Now I'd like to figure out a way to make the input box and the submit button the same height. I know...I'm being fussy. 😉

I'd also like "home" on the main nav menu to line up on the left side and can't seem to get that to work either - it's refusing to budge no matter what I target.

And one final question - if I want the fa-search icon (the magnifying glass) on the search button instead of the word "search", how do I do that? Every attempt I've made so far has yielded a magnifying glass ABOVE the search box, and I spent a boatload of time trying to find the right code to make that work too. :p I finally took it out, but if you can point me in the right direction, I'd be grateful, even if I don't end up using it here.

Paddi, the only question I can answer here is about the Home on the main nav.  It seems like you scrapped the search stuff since you asked this question.

In terms of the Home nav link - you will need to remove the left padding from that 1 menu item.  Something like:

.main.menu .menu-item-62 a{padding-left:0px}

Thanks, Rick - that did it. 🙂 I'd tried targeting it, but think I left out .main.menu and it didn't work. I also adjusted the padding on the header so everything now lines up on the left.

As for the search questions - I removed it from the front page, but moved it on the inner pages - so you can see it at http://knowlesplumbing.com/services for instance. Sorry about that.

Of course...now the client has decided they don't need a search function at all, so I'll be removing the whole thing shortly anyway, but if you get a minute today and want to have a look, for academic purposes only, the questions still stand: how do you use the fa-search magnifying glass inside the search box - OR on the submit button, and how do you make the search submit button and the search box the same height. I have two other sites I'm about to start working on, both of which will need search functions and while I don't know where the search boxes will go yet, it's stuff I'd like to know how to do and haven't figured out despite much trial and error on my own. (If I get farther along with the other two sites, I'll post the URLs).

You would have to build a WordPress search form from scratch in order to be able to do it.

Or I suppose you could use a search icon image as a background image of the input - but it wouldn't go away when you started typing.

Essentially the search button needs to be a button or link rather than input
