Just for information purposes, a couple of things.

1. If you're running Thesis, and wish to update to WP 5.0, you must install the Classic Editor plugin. Otherwise, when you go to edit a page, you'll get a blank white screen. Chris Pearson has said that Thesis does not, and will not support blocks.

2. I inadvertently updated 6 of my sites to WP 5.0 (still more than 20 not updated) because I'd forgotten that they had automatic updates set in Softaculous in CPanel (not something I do now) and I'd not turned that off. It will override settings in plugins such as Easy Updates Manager, which was on all of these sites and set NOT to do major updates. I installed the Classic Editor on all and so far, all appears fine, though I haven't done anything much to any of these sites other than updating some text on one.

I am otherwise proceeding with caution. The sites that did update, with one exception, are less busy, possibly a little less vital to their owners than some of my other sites. All have backups and could have been rolled back if necessary, but I'm cautiously optimistic that this won't be required. All of the sites are running the latest version of Thesis and 4 of the 6 use the Agility Nude skin. The other two are use the Classic Responsive skin. One of them has Woo Commerce installed too, in case anyone is wondering about that.

Paddy ..

Did Chris send out an e-mail that talked about "if you're running Thesis, and wish to update to WP 5.0, you must install the Classic Editor plugin. Otherwise, when you go to edit a page, you'll get a blank white screen. Chris Pearson has said that Thesis does not, and will not support blocks" ......

I never got an e-mail about this, and after reading your post, I went over to DIY and checked the blog, as well as the support forums, and did not see anything about this, and then I checked his Twitter, where he seems to like to post info, and also did not see anything about this there.

Did he just privately e-mail this info?

Just curious as I am a bit perplexed, as it seems something as major as a fact that "Thesis does not and will not support blocks" would be something that DIY would want to convey to all the DIY users, along with some info for users who end up always being told to update .. update everything all the time - and then they end up updating to WP 5.0 and aren't aware of the need to add Classic Editor in order not to end up with a blank white screen.

Hi Carolin, I discovered the blank screen issue on my own, and that installing the Classic Editor fixed it - posted to the Gutenberg thread and Chris confirmed that this was the case. You're right - he should put some big warnings up, though I suspect most in the Thesis community are installing the Classic Editor and/or holding off on updating to WP 5.0. There has been a lot less screaming and yelling than I was expecting, but it's early days. Hours, really.

As for Thesis never supporting Gutenberg blocks, Chris said that earlier today:

Both of these threads are in the Wordpress section on the DIY forums.

Thanks Paddy...

I agree that there has been not a lot of 'screaming and yelling' ..... which is great!

But I do have to say that those couple postings Chris made about something this major are really are pretty obscure for users.

Thanks again for showing me the links and posting them here  -- I looked about on the DIY forum and blog and didn't find anything.

Paddy

Have you tried using Gutenberg, it appears to work for me but I do have Classic editor installed.

From my point of view I do not want or need Gutenberg.

I have virtually no plugins installed.

Hi Keith - haven't had time to try it out on a test site (will not do it on an active client's site) but the very concept doesn't much appeal. I send out MailChimp emails for a number of clients and organizations, and basically, that's what they've done with WP. Turned every item into a "block" - with all the attendant problems. I've certainly read more negative than positive reviews. But I will take it out for a spin at some point.

I also have anywhere from 10 to 25 or so plugins on my clients' sites. I don't add them willy-nilly and choose them very, very carefully. So far, on the now 7 sites running WP 5 + Classic Editor, things have been fine as far as I can tell. (Another site snuck in there overnight - again, a Softaculous update I didn't catch...)

Thanks Paddy.

Does not appeal to me either. Nothing like knowing a bit of HTML and CSS. But WP must think they are losing ground on the likes of Wix.

Anyone thinking of going to Wix, check if it is responsive, most are not.
