The next thing that we’re going to do then is coordinate the site with Google. Now that we’ve got our Google+ content and profile put together, we need to do go to the website and link to the Google My Business page.
Add Link in Website under Google Authorship
If you come over to Thesis Home what you do is come over to the Site menu and go to Google Authorship and then you put the link to the Google+ profile here. With the link to the Google+ profile that sets up the default author.
In this case, we have more than one author so this is the Google+ profile link for Julie which is what we’ll put in there for the time being.
So what we’re going to do here is coordinate the information that we set up over here, that is the authors and the publisher information, with the website and we’re going to do that in 3 ways. I’m going to show you how to do it in Thesis 2.1 and in Thesis 1.8.5. Then I’m going to show you how to link Google accounts in Genesis 2.1.
Let’s start off with Thesis 2.1. This is the site that they’re working on and if you come over to Thesis Home and go to Google Authorship, you’re going to take your Google+ profile link and put it here. This is the default author link for the website.
If you have multiple authors as they do here we’re going to use one for each author and we’re going to put that in their profile pages but this is the profile link for Julie, it’s that number plus that.
If we come over to Stephen, this is the profile for Stephen. So we’ve got Julie and Stephen’s profile numbers here. If we were in Thesis 2.2, which is not out yet but will be out soon, and you were over here in Thesis Home you would see also a Google Publisher section and this is where you would put that Google Publisher link.
Add the Google Publisher Number
So if we come back over to the page and what we do is go to Settings and go to For your site, Get setup code. This number right here, that is the Google Publisher number and so when Thesis 2.2 comes out you would put the Google Rel Publisher number right there just like that rather than the whole link. Pardon me, it wants the link, it doesn’t just want the number it wants the whole link.
So we come back over to this and we grab the whole link so it’s https:// that is a link. Take that whole link and stick it here under the Tracking Scripts, save that and now that’s going to show up in the Tracking Scripts. Then we want to take this one step further and create authorship accounts for both authors on the site. So if we come over to Users and look at their users they’ve created a user for me and there’s the main admin without a name or an email address and then this must be staff.
What we’re going to do is we’re going to Add New User and the critical thing is to use a username that looks like your name so we’re going to use DrStephenScott. That is going to be the username and the email address will be drstephenscottbds@gmail, okay and then the first name, last name. We don’t care about that stuff anymore, I’m going to get a strong password then you can obviously change this and we’re going to make you an author. Okay, Add New User.
Once this user has been added we’re going to go edit the author. Display name publicly is Stephen Scott, we could also say Dr. Stephen Scott and then it’ll show up there and then our Google+ profile link here is that link that we have right here and anything that is attributed to Stephen as the author we’ll have this link associated with it and update the user.
So Dr. Stephen Scott right there, that’s what we want it to display publicly as. Then we are going to create one more and the user name in this case, is DrJulieScott. Okay, here’s that big long password again, set her up as an author.
Now the reason why we are doing this instead of just using the admin account is so that the name shows up in the authored posts and that instead of whatever the username is, actually this is going to be a problematic username because you can’t have, well maybe you can have spaces in the username.
Link the Author Profile to Your Google+ Page
Anyway, the reason for doing this is so that you have an author profile that is linked to your Gmail that is linked to your Google+ page and that when you look at the URL it’s going to say Dr. Julie Scott and not something else, that’s the purpose for having this. Then we’ll come down and put our Google+ profile in and that should complete it.
Then what you do when you’re going to specify posts and author, okay well we’re just going to pretend that this is a post instead of a testimonial. What we’re going to do then is hit Quick Edit and now you can change the author, not admin but Dr. Julie Scott. If you hit update now and then if we view that and you can see by Dr. Julie Scott and if we inspect the element you’ll see that we have our link publisher some place in here.
Okay, there’s the author link and it is going to the right place, it’s going to Julie and if this were setup so that it had schema activated then this link would specify that. If you go to the Dr. Julie Scott archive page you can see the archive page now says author/drjuliescott. That’s the main reason for setting up a specific author and you can assign authors to these posts individually after the fact. I’m looking at questions.
“Do I need to be setup as an author rather than an admin to get the Google author connection?” No, you don’t. The only reason why you do the Google author here is so that you are able to really nail this name, that’s what really matters here, is nailing the name. If we look at this one here, this is probably where most of the posts are, admin because that’s the default admin name when they set it up. Well, author admin doesn’t really help you any but author Dr. Julie Scott does help.
Now, the next thing we’re going to do is this was sort of the fake instance of it, now we’re going to do it in the real instance and the only thing we can do in the real instance here is, we can’t add the author to Thesis 1.8.5 but we can add the publisher to Thesis 1.8.5. So in order to add the author all we do is again, copy that link information and in Thesis 1.8.5, go to Site Options, Additional Scripts and paste it there and save it and now we can test it.
Let’s see where is it, Done. So we’ve got it and well, what happens if we refresh the page now? Okay, well I think we have this now properly linked because we’ve created the code here. Let’s just make we’ve linked that actually. Let’s hit Edit again and let’s go to website here, okay that’s correct. Yes, I think anything else that we want to do is going to have to be done after we verify.
