What types of templates are in Thesis 2? There are two kinds of templates.
There are core templates which are automatically applied to the appropriate pages. You don’t do anything to make that happen. You don’t have to intervene or say which template applies to which kind of page. It automatically applies because of WordPress template rules.
Custom templates are templates that you create that you then manually apply to certain pages, posts, categories, tags, etc. We are going to create a custom template today so you’ll see how to apply a custom template to a specific page. Custom templates are never automatically used they are always only used if you specify that you want to use it.
Core Parent Templates
The core parent templates in Thesis 2.3 are Single, Page, and Archive. You see that here when you click on this. Home is a core template but not a parent template.
Children Inherit Content and Arrangement
A parent template has this little plus sign beside it and it shows you all of the other templates that inherit the content and arrangement of the parent template.
The Page template has the Front Page and the 404 Error Page as children. If you don’t do anything the Front Page and the 404 page are identical to the Page template.
The same thing is true with the Archive template. If you don’t do anything all of these Archive templates get their settings and their arrangement from the Archive template. As children it has the Category Tag, Custom Post Type, Custom Taxonomy, Date, Author and Search Result.
Custom Post Types Create Children Under Single
The most important Single children templates are the Attachment Page and any custom post type you create. For example, if you install WooCommerce you end up with a Product post type and then you’ve got a Product template. So, any custom post type that you create inside of WordPress automatically ends up with a child template under the Single template.
These are the templates that you are going to work with when you want to customize the appearance of something in your skin. You’re going to work with one of those templates or you are going to create a custom template and manually apply it.
